Puzzling as that was, to stop and look at one’s wounds while a threat was still present and fighting, Cairo used the coyote’s distraction to his advantage, raking his upper canines over its hip as it sought to press the distracted female wolf.

He bit deep, dancing back and ripping his teeth free as the coyote again twisted to face him, back arched, jaws gaping in the typical, fluffed out coyote threatening stance, ready to dart in at him.
