Sedna was grateful for the warmth of the water, the lap of waves like a gentle swelling chorus welcoming her home, so different from the icy lagoon she had left behind. The fingerling fish came first, sucking at the tops of her toes as they darted between them, mistaking her for some suddenly sprouted tree she assumed, her fur for the green slimy growth that came beneath the water line. Gradually they were joined by bigger fish, still not much more than a mouthful. Finally the bigger fish began to return.

It was harder to adjust for moving water than it was her still lagoon, but she thought she might have the adjustment almost right. She just needed the fish to continue on its course, to not startle and flee back to deeper water. One last inhale before she plunged her head beneath the water, eyes still open and stinging against the salt as her jaws clamped down. She lifted her head with a jerk, ready for the change in weight as they broke the surface, turning to fling the fish back towards the shore where she would have a better chance of holding it down. She pivoted to follow it, suddenly remembering her companions and hoping it sailed clear of either of them and reached her target.
