She was honestly taken by surprise when he attacked. She didn't think what she said would be so hurtful. And she had gravely mistaken the intention of her son.

Her jaw sprung opened as she saw his tongue coming straight in her eye sight. She clamped her jaw down on his jowls from the inside of his mouth and when he twisted it wasn't what she was expecting. She yelped in pain as he twisted her, her grip becoming free and her lips slipping out from his grip. She immediately went to counter after recovering with a bite towards his windpipe just where his neck flexed at the base. All of her defenses aligned to protect her eyes, ears, her sensitive underbelly. She was scarred to know he was a lot more powerful than she was especially in her old age. But she wouldn't bend into the idea of that and just let him win. She wanted to believe she could over power him in the end.
