Rudy always had all the answers.  When the pup didn’t have them he just decided what sounded best and went with it and things always worked out.  It had always worked out in the past and he’d seen no reason it wouldn’t in the future.  Rudy was a pup living in an ideal world and while he had wondered why Grimm wasn’t with his true family the concept of family dying or the guilt of it being caused by oneself could never have touched him.

For once Rudy had no words.  For once the pup realized he had made a mistake.  There was no fear of the imminent threat, in fact Grimm could get a great first shot in if he wanted as Rudy’s mind was too busy to try and process a whole new world of information.  How would he feel on his family dead?  That wasn’t a reality Rudy could even fathom.  That hollow feeling he’d felt with Tika’s fear came back to his stomach.  These words and questions were more things that were wrong and didn’t fit with his image of the world.

The pup was watching him, ready for a response and itching for a fight.  Rudy tried to shake away the shock at least long enough to respond with something.  “I,” he what? “I was wrong.”  He doubted an ‘I’m sorry’ would have done any good and doubted this would help either but it was a response. Questions sprung to mind but none he wanted to ask and by appearance none Grimm would likely wish to answer.  Rudy’s tail lowered and even tucked a bit under with a sense of loss he had no words for and confusion as he hadn’t lost anything.

“I think,” Rudy’s brow scrunched up taking the last question through his mind even as he wanted to avoid it and maybe no answer was needed for Grimm.  Rudy’s mind struggled with the question he didn’t want to think about but couldn’t help but turn it around.  “I think I still would want family, I think.  At least I’d want others.  I wouldn’t want to be alone.” The motley grey pup’s voice was soft now as he pondered it, eyes looking upward to Grimm.

What to do? Rudy slowly made his tail lay in a more relaxed position and checked himself.  He could be strong, at least a little stronger.  What felt right?  That was always what he had gone by.  What felt right warned it still hurt but he focused his gaze more on Grimm again.  “Ok, we aren’t family, unless you change your mind.” Rudy felt more confident as he spoke but it was with somber words. “However so long as you are in this pack I will be here if you need to talk, or anything else.  I messed up and I was wrong.  I’ll try not to make the mistake again.”

Rudy was going to find family after this to feel the warmth of their love and reminder he still had what Grimm had lost.  He would still be leader someday but today he wanted to justs be a puppy getting that love and safety from family.
