Don't poke your nose where it doesn't belong

It's not like he was going to adventure that far. It was just right next door to the hot springs, right? He could still see the steam of the water from here so he definitely wasn't that far from home! Certainly not enough to get in trouble for. At least, that's what he kept telling himself as he wandered away from the pack's borders and into the big, drooping willow trees that dotted the next territory over from his home. He had heard that Miss Tamsyn and Miss Resin's pups got permission to go this far out of the territory so why couldn't he? He was definitely tough enough to go out on his own! Maybe not his sisters or Emilie, but him for sure. With that head strong thought boosting his confidence, he set out and left the pack's border behind, ignoring how the hot springs faded into the background and got lost behind all the willow trees he was weaving between.
He hopped over the streams he came across and the further he went into this new spot the more frequent those streams became. He curiously examined how some of them even went under some of the willow tree roots, making mini wooden bridges over the water. He started trying to use a particularly thick tree root as a bridge to get over one of the streams, placing his russet paws carefully one in front of the other while trying to keep his balance on the uneven, knobby surface. A little over half way, his balance slipped and with a squeak he went tumbling into the stream that was a short distance below, landing on his side with a splash. His long legs and lanky frame did not make for great climbing tools. He hopped back up onto his paws with an irritated huff, a grumpy frown on his lips while he shook himself to get the water out of his fur. Only one side of him was wet so half of him looked perfectly fine and normal while the other was spiked up from he water and sticking to him in odd places. He gave a little puppy growl, turning his attention to the tree root he had fallen off of and sticking his tongue out at the tree as if it had failed him and was the cause for his fall.
Leaving the scene of the crime behind, he trotted off to do some more exploring. His pale, ice blue eyes landed on the opening to what looked like a den and he looked at it curiously for a moment. He knew he wasn't supposed to go into other wolves' dens since his parents told him that was rude, but there wasn't a pack here and after a few curious sniffs he decided that it didn't smell like a wolf lived here at all. The idea of turning this into his secret hide out popped into his head and it made him grin excitedly. Whenever his siblings were bothering him, he could just come out here and hang out in his own secret hiding hole! Not even his parents would know about it! That was more than enough convincing for him since he wanted to check out the den anyway so just having a justification to do it was enough. He creeped into the shadowy den, getting about half way through the entrance before he heard something move and shift inside. It made him pause and hesitate with his butt still sticking out into the open, his ears perked up to listen. All of the sudden, something came rushing out at him, swiping at his face and making him stumble back out of the den with a yelp as scarp claws scratched his cheek.
He tumbled out of the den and threw himself back away from the hole before looking back to see a very grumpy looking badger lumbering out of the den after him. Ooooooh no, that's wasn't good! Ezra got himself back to his paws and backed away from the pointed headed, black striped creature just as it started hissing and bearing its even pointer teeth at him. He wondered if he could run back home, but were badgers fast? Could it catch up to him if he did try to run? Fighting it didn't seem all that smart either though - it had big claws to go along with its sharp teeth! His parents were going to be so mad at him for leaving now! He thought he could get away with sneaking out before they noticed he was gone, but how was he going to hide these scratches? While he was contemplating how much trouble he was going to be in, the badger lunged at him and grabbed his front leg in its teeth and bit him before he could jump out of the way. He yelped and immediately started swiping at the badger's face with his other paw, trying to claw at its eyes to make it let go.
That seemed to be at least enough to make the badger let go and Ezra was able to stumble back away from it again, but it caused him to fall back onto his haunches. The badger was about to come at him again and he was desperately trying to get back to his paws so he could start running when a screeching from over head made both of them look up toward the sky. Out of no where a dark flurry of feathers came dive bombing between him and the badger, blocking Ezra from his attacker and giving him a chance to bounce back to his paws. The big, black bird that came to his rescue grappled with the badger for a bit, flying up a couple of feet before dropping down again with massive talons extended to claw at it. The badger still stood and fought for a while longer, but after the eagle got in a few good swipes that left deep cuts around the badger's neck and back, the creature finally turned and waddled back into the safety of its den. With the badger officially driven off, Ezra stood there with his jaw hanging open in awe while his big, ice blue eyes stared at the big eagle that had saved him.
After a second of regaining his composure, a huge grin spread over his face and all he could say was just, "WOW! That was so cool!!" The eagle settled onto the ground in front of him, turning to face him with a curious tilt to his head. Now that the eagle was facing him he could see that the front part of him was actually a similar deep, reddish brown color to what most of his fur was, making them match way more than he had been expecting. "Thanks!! That was amazing!" The eagle gave a little dip of its head, showing he could understand what Ezra was saying which just made it all that much cooler. It reminded him of the raven that his mother kept and suddenly it dawned on him - "Do you wanna be my friend?!" The eagle tilted his head at Ezra again and he thought that it looked like he was thinking about it. "You can come live with me and my siblings and my parents! We just live a little bit further that way." He lifted his paw to point off toward the hot springs. "There's plenty of trees around our den! Birds like trees, right?" Ezra watched the eagle expectantly and after a few moments the eagle seemed to agree with a chirping, chittering noise and Ezra gave an excited bounce in response. "Yes!! That's awesome!! Oh, well, I mean I guess I'll have to ask my parents if you can stay, but they'll definitely say yes!" After some more excited cheering and hopping around his new friend, he called out, "Come on! Lets go!" before running back the way he came toward home and he glanced over his shoulder to watch his new eagle friend take off toward the sky and the black and chestnut eagle started soaring through the sky right above him. This suddenly turned from the best day ever to the worst day ever and right back around to the very best ever!
