Naturally, the much smaller wolf was quicker, and as he bowed his head, he spotted the incoming teeth and dropped to his knees in the typical stallion’s sparring move, head whipping around to snap blunt-but-strong teeth for the wolf’s near foreleg, hoping to snatch the limb and jerk it – and Kati – up with him as his hind legs pushed off and he came up to his hooves in a half rear, seeking to leap forward. And, even should he have failed to snag the wolf, he hoped to put a little space between them.
His fuzzy, glowing white shoulder bore fresh tooth marks instead of his leg, thanks to his quick actions, but though blood streaked his coat, he knew it wasn’t serious. He’d gotten worse from other stallions. He was thrilled at the activity where his life wasn’t in danger and yet he was sparring with wolves. It was novel, even after the festival, and he was enjoying it.
