Strangers in Time

She had been frequenting the willows lately, mostly because it was one of the few places she could find a bare patch of ground beneath the gnarled and twisted branches of the trees. Although the leaves had yet to grow back thanks to the cold, the draping branches were thick enough still to provide some shelter and protection. The ground was still frozen, but since she had learned how to build fires, she was able to keep warm. She never realized how much of a necessity fire was in times like this...especially for someone her age. Each year that passed made it harder, but the old she-wolf had learned how to keep her body tuned well enough that she could still keep up with even those in their prime. She wondered how her siblings were faring...she had heard from her older brother Dragon that her mother had finally passed away...and while she felt sad that she had missed her last chance to see her mother, she was also relieved. Her mother had been through so much in her life, she could finally rest in peace and not deal with the trials of the world. Still, she couldn't deny that her heart hurt sometimes when she thought about her. Swallowing back the lump that started to form, she stood and decided to take a walk. It would do her well, after all, and maybe she'd find something to eat while she was at it. Tossing another branch onto the fire so that it wouldn't burn out while she was gone, she watched the flames lick at its food for a moment before she turned and made her way past the reaching twigs of the old willows. |
