It's been awhile, where should we begin?

If he was being fair to himself, he wouldn't put the blame on himself for Azariah and Everlyse's disappearance. They had gone without a trace and he had no way of knowing if it was his own fault or not, but being the self deprecating man he was he couldn't help but turn that blame onto himself. He continued to wonder what things could have been if he had just been a better father, a better mate. He couldn't see how well he was doing out of thinking that he was doing poorly in those regards. Now there was no one to share the duties of parenthood with and he could only attempt to do better for his four remaining children.
When Sirius suddenly stopped Ulric would as well, turning to face the Fatalis man with a curious gaze. He listened to every word that was spoken and it reminded him of the things that he had lost sight of - the reasons why he had wanted to build his own pack once upon a time. He had wanted a place to keep his family safe, to keep them together instead of letting them continue to slip through his paws. Even though these were tenants that he had known all along, it took Sirius telling him to use family as the drive behind his leadership to remind him and help straighten out his wayward thoughts.
He was quiet for a moment as Sirius finished and he nodded, his expression serious and thoughtful. "I know you're right," he replied with a soft sigh. "Ever since my mate disappeared I've just..." he struggled to find the right words, giving a small shake of his head. "It's been... difficult. To say the least. Not just on me, but probably more so on our children." He lifted his gaze, looking back toward the castle looming above them. "I've lost most of my family at this point. My mother, sister, and nieces have all disappeared or passed away. I suppose I'm just overly cautious about losing any more of them."
With a sigh he turned his attention back to Sirius again. "But I want to make them proud. I want to keep The Hallows going for them... keep their home in tact." He only hoped that he would have it in him to do it all. As it was the confidence in his own ability to do so was lacking, but he hoped that perhaps that would come in time.
