Don't go breaking my heart

She grinned when he pulled her up tighter against him, more than happy to enjoy his hugs after fearing him for what felt like ages. Even though it had only been a week or two - it was so hard to even keep track - it almost felt like a whole year had passed in that amount of time. It felt like she was coming home again after being away for a really, really long time. Briar eagerly nodded in agreement with the compromise he offered, suggesting that they have their birthday celebration later in the summer to give time for things to settle down and to better go along with when they were actually born later in the season. "That sounds great, Dad," she insisted, more than happy to have something to look forward after all this darkness.
When he suggested that they go on a hunt now she grinned even wider, her tail wagging behind her. "Yeah!" Then she wouldn't have to part ways with him just yet and she wouldn't have to leave her father alone. Of course, the last time she had tried to make sure that he wouldn't be alone it had ended badly, but this time was different. It was day time, they weren't sleeping. He was safer during the day, at least in her mind. She wiggled away from his grasp and gave her fur a shake before looking up at him with an excited grin. It felt good to have something to do, somewhere to go, something to work on. It kept her busy and kept her from worrying so much.
"Where should we go?" she asked, letting him lead the way and guide her for her first hunt beyond catching the occasional rabbit or some other small creature. She hadn't really even hunted with another wolf before so it was all going to be a new experience for her, but she was eager to learn.
