As he had expected, Dunkan was all formality and business. He'd learned by now that the older male's terse personality was just a part of who he was, not necessarily reflecting his personal thoughts on anyone. Before the Hallowed wolf could express his reason for summoning him, Artorias knew what this meeting would be about. He could see the emptiness in Duncan's eyes, the lack of any sort of emotion or life. It made the young alpha frown to think one of his wolves was unhappy. Then Dunkan stated his desire: he wished to leave the Hallows in favor of Fenmyre. That did surprise Artorias more than a bit, and the shock reflected on his expression. Dunkan, the austere and reserved warrior of the Hallows, wanted to go live over in the rowdy pleasure-den of Fenmyre?
Dunkan wasn't finished though, and the man continued on to thank him for allowing the Hallows to be his home, explaining how he no longer felt needed as Artorias forged his own leadership to keep his mother's legacy alive. Artorias was touched that Dunkan saw him as worthy to continue on the legacy of the Hallows; that sincere compliment meant more to the lad than he'd ever know. The dark-furred brute waited until his pack mate—er, former pack mate—had said his piece before adding his own thoughts to their conversation. He started with a simple smile that exuded the warmth he felt for his wolves, then lifted a paw and went to place it upon Dunkan's shoulder. "There are no debts between family, Dunkan. You have been a staple of the Hallows since its inception. I've known you all my life. No matter where you go, you will always be a part of my family, and you will always have a place here in the Hallows." More than anything, that was what Artorias wanted the older wolf to know. He was family here and always would be. Should he ever wish to return, the gates of the Hallows would always be open to him.
Then Artorias' expression saddened some. "Your absence will be felt. Even if you feel you're no longer needed, we'll all feel your loss. But I know Chimera, and I know his pack needs capable warriors. Your talents will be put to good use over there." The Aegis gave a curt nod of his head, and though it hurt his heart, he agreed to let Dunkan go. "Dunkan Sarcova, you have my permission to go where you wish. Just promise me you'll never forget your way home should you ever need us for anything. Fenmyre is a close friend, I'm sure we'll still be seeing each other." Even if Dunkan was no longer a Hallows wolf, Fenmyre was basically their ally. He'd be living under the rule of another on the other side of the continent, but for the most part, nothing about their relationship would change. Plus, he could see the man needed a change of scenery, a new direction in his life, a purpose.
