Digging a hole to china

Mitros had done quite a few hunts now, having claimed an elephant, a giraffe, a hippo, some rabbits, and a stoat. He was improving quickly in technique and finesse, but something he was sorely lacking was experience in other styles of hunting. The elephant hunt had been a small example of what a wolf could do if it did not have the power (or numbers) to take down a prey animal, and Mitros wanted to further explore that way of acquiring a kill. If he was going to be a loner for the rest of his life, he'd probably need to figure out how to take down bigger game by himself - and the best way to do that was a trap.
He'd heard of snares and traps that were rigged to execute a prey animal on touch, but those seemed complex and without an instructor to guide him through the motions, he doubted he'd be very successful. A pitfall trap however seemed easy enough, and he knew it could work from the way they'd driven the elephant off the cliff. The first step, he assumed, was to dig a hole. All the while he worked, he sang a wordless, happy tune, already dreaming of the meat that would soon be his.
