The unicorn stallion had been carrying the heaviest packs and poles for the yurt the healers would be erecting. Participating in the hunt wasn’t in his cards; he was a herbivore, after all. Hunting another herbivore was against his instincts. It was enough to walk among the herds at home, keeping an eye out for the old, badly injured, and sick that needed to be culled for the health of the rest of the prey herds.
No, he’d be standing guard over the healers, and if the elephant did happen to charge their way, he was hopefully large and bright enough to make the beast change its mind and go the other way.
The stallion lowered to the ground and Legacy removed the poles of the travois from the harness the pack had fashioned for him at his own suggestion and knowledge passed down from his mother. She’d worn such a thing as a filly, before the humans had disappeared and she’d found herself, and the rest of the horses and animals at the farm she’d been born and raised on, left to sink or swim, as it were.
To the wolves, the humans had been gone for many generations; practically legendary myths, despite the many things left behind. For the horses and other long-lived creatures, they’d been gone only a short time. He’d heard elephants could live for decades. How many had the old bull seen till now?
