Calico watches Eden, eyes filled with curiosity and excitement and his small head tilts as she speaks. Icy blue eyes watching as she considers his question and her first suggestion has his brows furrowing in thought. Gaze turns to sweep the area for grass and dirt, finding none but not knowing how to break that fact to the adult. Her voice pulls his attention back to Eden and Jack’s tail thumps as she mentions using sand, going so far scoop up the stuff. Yeah! That makes more sense!
However, it is her next words that are life changing for the patchwork pup and his eyes round in surprise. The thought had never even occurred to him to just throw a net! Okay, to be fair, he had never seen a net before he literally stumbled into it but still, in the few minutes since he knew exactly what it is, he had never thought of that! Tail thumps the sand harder as he watches Eden work, the adult making quick work of weaving the seaweed net back together.
Wonder pulls at his features as she presents the repaired item to him and Calico looks up at her with quiet admiration. Gently, carefully, Jack takes his new prize in his mouth and looks at the crab that she points out. Chest puffs put as he gives a firm dip of his head and, with that, Calico Jack races off, running in front of the red creature to cut off any path of retreat as he throws his net at the creature.
His first try misses completely, the net falling to the left of his intended target and a soft, “Dang it” fills the air around him. But Jack is undeterred as he races forward to scoop up his net. Once more, his net hangs from his maw and he is racing after the retreating crab, determined to keep it from reaching the water. Paws carry him in front of the crab and the net is thrown but the creature cuts back in an unexpected move and Jack’s net once again misses.
For the next ten minutes, Calico Jack scoops up his net and races after the doomed creature, the pair facing off in a battle of wills. Once more, his paws kick up sand as he cuts off the crab’s path and the seaweed flies, the pup ready to retrieve it and try again. However, a small gust of wind pushes his weapon to the side and the net comes to rest over the crab.
Eyes round and he looks back up the beach (when did Eden get so far away?) shouting, “I WIN!! I WIN! I CAUGHT THE CRAB!” Calico Jack dances a small victory jig, twirling and spinning as his prey silently slips out from under the net and races back into the water. Oh well, at least he knows how to use a net now!
