Sweet Home... Somewhere?

Recollection of what happened dissipated before he could even open his eyes. Water-clogged lungs hacked and sputtered as he felt the broil of the sun overhead. His nose twitched with the scent of heady grass and possibly freshwater... Lids fluttered a few times, blinking away grains of sand, as he attempted to lift his head. Sprawled out, lanky legs in an awkward position, it was obvious that he had been crawling for some time before he collapsed. His eyesight was still blurry as he managed to lean up enough to peek above the shifting grass surrounding him. A few rabbits, possibly some deer, but none of his kind. His brow furrowed slightly. Where was he? Just last night, he had been sharing some home-brewed moonshine with a couple of buddies before he blacked out. After their frolic with the cattle, he couldn't remember a single thing. Had the cattle kicked him that hard? Slowly, his senses drew back to him as he scrambled to shaky legs and looked around frantically. Around his neck, his waterlogged bandana still hung looking rather worse for wear. His other items were nowhere to be seen. Scowling as he swore under his breath, he spotted two lumps not far off. Barely breathing and waterlogged themselves, two goats lay unconscious near him. "Rootin'? Tootin'?" Cassius whispered as he took a few tentative steps toward the small goats. Their feeble bleats told him they were at least alive. Mildly concerned that he was missing a goat, he figured he could look for Scootin' once he got his bearings about him. Letting out a deep sigh, Cass shook out his coat and took another glance around. Sunk into the bottom of a basin with a pool of water not far off, he squinted up at the sun. Where in the world was he? He definitely wasn't in Kansas anymore... |
