Deluge stood in the sea of tall grass, honey-gold eyes staring out at the empty expanse as the sun sat low on the horizon, another day drawing to a close. The fuck? Was all she could think to herself as she sniffed the air. Not a hint of prey as far as she could smell. Overhead, her seagull floated lazily on an updraft, no luck from above either. It left the girl baffled. This was one of the best places for a quick snack, but it seemed even the rabbits had either moved out or were sheltering in place deep under the ground.
Her low growl of frustration swallowed up the growling of her stomach. It wasn't that she would be short of food if she just went home, but she wasn't sure she was ready yet. It wasn't like the raiders had done anything wrong, but she also couldn't be bothered facing the others just yet. The simple fact they had found a new home and had done some level of cleaning to try and preparation that hinted at permanency, well... it was just a bit stifling.
The grey and pink pirate stalked forward with little care for the noise she made, her mottled pelt rippling in the wind as her muscles tensed beneath it. This barren stretch of land, usually teeming with life, had thrown her off balance, there was too much wrongness in the air, and it was only about to get worse.
The wind shifted, bringing an odd scent to her nose. It was a musky, unpleasant odour that sent a shiver down her spine. She crouched low, tipping her chin and bringing her antlers forward, ears swivelling, and her senses on high alert. From the corner of her eye, she caught a flicker of movement—an eerie silhouette against the fading light.
A pack of four hyenas emerged from the grass, their maniacal laughter slicing through the air like a chilling melody. Deluge's eyes narrowed as she took in their crude appearance—unkempt fur, sharp grins filled with yellowed teeth, and an air of chaotic energy that surrounded them. Her fur flashed in response, the bioluminescence responding to the sudden racing of her heart.
Deluge's instincts told her to stand her ground, to show no fear. She bared her teeth in a silent snarl, her muscles coiled, ready to spring into action if needed. The odds were against her, though. It might have been her first time facing them, but she knew hyenas were notorious for their cunning, and their ferocity in numbers.
The pack began to circle her, their laughter growing louder, the sound filling the air with a sinister edge. Deluge's heart pounded in her chest, but she refused to let her fear show. She wouldn't let herself be brought down by a pack of scavengers.
Without preamble, the hyenas lunged at her. Deluge's muscles reacted on pure instinct, propelling her forward as she twisted to evade the snapping jaws. Her teeth found purchase in the side of one hyena, and she shook her head violently, a fierce growl rumbling deep within her throat. The injured canine yelped and stumbled back, a mixture of surprise and pain in its eyes. The others hesitated for a moment, clearly taken aback by Deluge's counterattack. But their hesitation didn't last long. If anything, it only made them more intent, closing in again, circling her like vultures eyeing a wounded animal. Deluge's heart raced as she continued to assess her options.
She could feel the sting of scratches as one of the hyenas managed to swipe at her flank. She darted away, narrowly avoiding a set of snapping jaws. It was clear that the pack, though small, was more coordinated than she had initially thought, and they were determined to wear her down through sheer persistence if nothing else. As the battle raged on, her mined began to race. She knew she had to make a decision—continue fighting an uphill battle or find a way to escape. Her breath was coming in ragged gasps, and her muscles were starting to ache from the exertion. The scent of blood hung heavy in the air, a stark reminder of the stakes.
With a sudden, fierce growl, Deluge lunged towards a gap in the circling pack. The hyenas reacted instantly, lunging after her, but her speed gave her the advantage. She twisted and turned, her lithe form allowing her to slip through the tight space just in the nick of time. The hyenas' snapping jaws missed her by mere inches.
On the other side, Deluge didn't stop. She sprinted through the grass towards the beach, her muscles burning with exertion. Behind her, the hyenas' furious cries echoed, but she was slowly putting distance between them. Her heart pounded, and her breath came in ragged bursts, but she pushed herself harder, driven by the need to survive.
