The pup had grown quite a bit since he'd first been able to leave the den. Calix was still tiny, little more than a scrap of fur with amethyst eyes, but he was larger than he had been. Of course, that didn't say much. He'd been a scrawny creature when he was born, and he had put on weight since leaving the den. He had been so impatient to leave the den that he had begun to go off his feed at first, and now Calix was certainly back on it.

The howl echoed on the horizon, and Calix's head jerked up, his tongue curling around the pebble that he held carefully in his mouth. It was his pebble, the one that he had kept in the den for as long as he could remember. Not that that meant much; his memory spanned about as long as the proverbial goldfish's. But it was his most treasured companion, hoarded separately from the other fragments of the outside world that Calix had collected in his delight in leaving the den. His corner of the den was dominated by a pile of dead autumn leaves of varying colors, clumps of dirt, and pebbles of several sizes and colors. There were also several piles of various treasures in the small bit of Amenti's territory that Calix had traveled this far, abandoned and entirely forgotten by the black pup.

It was this pebble that Calix treasured above all else, however. The little grey thing was not distinctive to any but him, but he adored it. It was shifted in his jaw slightly as Calix bounded of, stumbling over his paws every few steps as he approached his mother.

The pebble fell from his maw in his delight as he raced up to her, butting up against her leg happily. "Mommeh!"
