Summer slipped like sand through their fingertips. Here, and then gone. Selkie was already pretty certain that she missed it, a chill hanging in the air-- something like a promise. Something like a threat. It was her first autumn, and then? Then she would be a year old. It would be an entire year very soon, that they'd been here, among the living. Something about it felt surreal, felt strange. Hey, she did too. Surreal. Strange.
Night came on sooner by the day, and Selkie hadn't realized it would get so dark so fast. The little girl had been sitting out, watching the first stars flicker to life from her spot on the beach. Sure, she's used to feeling small, but the stars? The stars make her feel even smaller. Around her, the beach finds itself coming to life. Silvery and shimmering. Above her head? Colors the likes of which she's never seen. Selkie's eyes go wide, gaze dancing. Woah.
There couldn't be anything more beautiful, she's sure of it.
