A flash of fur, Teeth met flesh. Redrum had latched onto something, but it wasn’t the Avalon Alpha he had aimed for. The woman’s pet had taken her place, and the boy snarled past his teeth, tail lashing as he tried to push the dog away and release it at the same time. But as he was trying to do so the smaller weight of the woman was thrown against one of his forelegs, the act causing the boy to stagger and hunker down, taking his weight low in an effort to lash out at the woman with a quick snap of his jaws. All the while the boy’s golden eyes gleamed with unseeing resolve to succeed. He had to. He had to because his mother was watching. He didn’t want her to see him fail.
