Absinth woke with a start, a sharp, nauseating wave crashing over her. She barely had time to register the discomfort before she was on her feet, stumbling out of her den. Her vision blurred, and she cursed under her breath, trying to steady herself as she made her way to the edge of the clearing where the den was located.

“Fuck,” She muttered, her voice shaky and strained. “What the hell?” She fell to her knees, nausea overwhelming her. Her ravens, ever alert, stirred from their roosts, concerned caws filling the early morning air. They fluttered around her, a dark cloud of worry.

Absinth barely noticed them as she retched. Thankfully her stomach was empty so nothing came forth, but still she heaved with violent insistence. With a groan, she collapsed onto her side, gasping for breath. The cool frosty air of a dawn in the Sound was a relief against her feverish skin.

One of her ravens landed beside her, its beady eyes filled with concern. It pecked gently at her ear, as if trying to comfort her. Absinth managed a weak smile, reaching out to stroke its feathers. “I’ll be fine~” She assured the bird, though she wasn't sure who she was trying to convince more — herself or her feathered companion.
