Ethereal shifts

Phobia heard them before he, well saw wasn't exactly the right word. Even with cat like pupils expanded to nearly the whole of his eyes there was little he could truly see in the dark. Shapes and movement mostly. Either way a low growl reached him before the blurry outline of a figure did. Her scent really hit him then, and something that had been nagging at the back of his mind decided it was tired of being ignored... Why was her scent... Familiar? Phobia stopped, squinting into the dark, unaware he wasn't seeing the wolf herself but rather her pet. Pressed into the wall as she was, and small as she was it would have been hard to see her right away if they had much light to work by and they did not.
Phobia cocked his head to the side, curious and yet frustrated by his own lack of recognition. Not that she could be blamed, Phobia's preoccupation when he'd been younger had been mostly with himself and his family, a stray brought in by his father wouldn't have been worth his consideration at the time. Even if now he might wish he had paid any attention. Worse still there was another canine scent, one he didn't realize came from the form he had locked his gaze onto... He was alone, and she was not.
"Strange place to be wandering in the dark." He finally broke the silence. The words could be seen as threatening perhaps, but his tone was silky. "Though I suppose I'm not one to talk." There was a hint of amusement to his voice. Phobia wasn't what most would consider a "friendly" wolf but he had learned to suppress the aggression. With time he'd grown to be at least... Sociable.
