Failure!
The hunting party, try as they might, isn't able to take down the caribou. Atreyu's final attack, jabbing a stray piece of metal up into the prey animal's belly, seems to succeed- spilling its entrails all over the ground, and the wolf below- but in a final rush of panic the creature is able to slip away, somehow unable to be followed.
