A pleasant warmth grew in her stomach as she listened to Wake speak. It was sparkling and effervescent, cresting and waning as she stood up shakily and then sat down again. Lying down sounded awfully good right now. Her eyes still watered a bit from coughing, the burn in her throat was easing and giving way to a feeling of being swaddled in downy feathers. Finch took in another breath, her eyes half lidded, and she accepted the little wrapped treat he passed her without question. Once upon a time, she would have heard Corvus' voice in her head reminding her not to take food from strangers.
But Wake wasn't a stranger. He was her girlfriend'scaptor'sCalliope's brother, and Callie had send before she went away that Finch belonged to her. Anyone who messed with her had the Insidious Queen to answer to, and she figured Wake would know that well enough. "Poppies..." she said, her voice drifting off as she considered the rest of his words. They ebbed and flowed past her ears but she found that she wasn't quite hearing a lot of it. "Mushrooms... what do the best ones even look like?" The hunger in her stomach was becoming difficult to ignore but finally it wasn't a needle in her side, it was a space that needed to be filled. Finch popped the little peppermint and sugar bundle Wake had given her into her mouth and made an obscene groan of appreciation as saliva flooded her mouth in response to the sugar. "Oooh, that's delicious!"
