Balrog was no stranger to a wolf so cocky, having grown up with Citadel, but the sheer venom dripping from the smaller wolf’s words struck a nerve. His eyes, those obsidian orbs gleaming with an unnatural sheen, narrowed dangerously. The raven on the nearest perch let out a sharp, rasping cry as if echoing its master’s irritation.
“Cute,” Balrog growled, his voice like gravel underfoot. His muscles tensed instinctively, hackles bristling, as Davey sprang into action. The axe’s sudden extension was a clever trick, and Balrog’s gaze followed the motion with sharp precision.
The strike came low, aiming for his knees, but Balrog’s reflexes were honed by his training. He leapt back just enough to avoid the blade’s edge, the movement more a predator’s glide than a retreat. The sharp air whistled past his legs, but the real sting came from the insult - Davey’s arrogance burned hotter than the threat of steel.
“You’re not even worthy of that axe,” Balrog snarled, his lips pulling back to reveal thick teeth. He lunged forward in retaliation, keeping his weight low as he aimed a vicious strike with one heavily plated foreleg, intending to batter the smaller wolf’s exposed side. His bracers gleamed as they moved with bone-crushing intent.
At the same time, he lashed out with his dagger. The obsidian weapon, glinting with the promise of pain, cut through the air in a tight arc, aimed to at Davey's face in an attempt to get him to drop the axe. Balrog wasn’t aiming to kill - not yet - but the sting of the dagger would be a stark warning if it hit.
“Come on, then,” he growled, his voice a deep rumble as he pressed forward, testing Davey’s speed and resolve. The ravens took flight, circling overhead and cawing loudly, as if heralding the battle below. Balrog’s frustration burned like a fire in his chest, and he was determined to show this reckless boy exactly what it meant to pick a fight with him.
