what a life

The tide was out, leaving much of the damp beach open and exposed. Upon the sand lay the ebony figure of a woman, forelegs outstretched and her head resting gently atop them, letting the sun soak into her dark pelt and warm her from the outside in. It was the closest she got to comfort, though feeling the warmth of the sun was still nothing like feeling the warmth of her companion beside her.
Natalya needed a break from the search to clear her mind. When the scent of the sea caught in her nostrils, she followed it obediently and set herself to rest before it, facing the waters that she could not see. Every so often her ears flickered in recognition of the sound of waves and the occasionally jumping fish. She could feel the impact of the waves on the shore reverberate through the sand just like the creatures that burrowed beneath it. It wasn't often that she got to enjoy pleasures such as this, but when she did she reveled in them. If only Helios could be with her now...
With her thoughts she drifted off to sleep, a brief dream of home and the family she had momentarily left behind. The family, she reminded herself, she would be reunited with soon enough. The faint sound of footsteps would rouse her, leading her to raise her head and turn it in the direction of the noise, curious as to who and what approached.
