The Blind Side

The world had gone black, the lovely day swallowed up by the thick darkness that had swooped down upon the small family. Kyung had been fascinated at first, then terrified. He couldn't breathe, couldn't see! The pounding blood in his ears made it hard to hear, but he could feel his mother press into him, look up to make out the vague outline of her form. She pushed them forwards in a hurried pace; he kept close to her as she guided them through the forest. At one point they grew close to the trees, their looming forms threatening in the gloom. He could not see, only outlines and shadows, so it was not surprising that he didn't see the root stuck up out of the ground that tripped him. He went down with a grunt ash rising in a cloud then settling down on him again. He picked himself up, scanning frantically for his mother who seemed to have not noticed his fall. Shapes moved all around on the horizon but he could not tell one from another. He let loose a small howl, ash coating his throat. |
