She would watch as he would listen, and she almost felt as though he would grow icy with every word she allowed him. As she finished her first story, his eyes would close. Before she could worry anymore though she would tell him of the children that she and Alpine had created. His eyes would flash open, and for the longest moment he would just stare. She would feel her smile fall as the cold would turn into an ice storm. She didn't know what she had done, but it was completely obvious that he did not share in her joy.
Everything she had done, she did for her pups. The only regret she would hold was that she had told no one that she and her husband were retreating to the island. She didn't know how the disease spread she only knew that while the plague was happening her pups were in danger. "I see..." he would finally say, his voice too cold for her brother. "Congratulations. Mother would be proud." He acted like he didn't know what to do, like her bringing these precious lives into the world was not worth celebrating. Had the disease changed her brother from the incredibly kind and happy wolf he once was? "She would be, you're right. So why aren't you?" There was a hurt in her voice now, he had to understand what she did and why she did it. If he wanted an apology for her leaving with out a word, she would admit her fault. She did not regret any other action she made. Children and marriage should have brought the Black family together, but it seemed it was only driving them apart.
