black mambo [fiamette]

Nagendra’s eyes followed the gouge in the earth a little longer, treading carefully along the edges and scooping into the darkness in the center. He did not try to make much sense of it after deciding his puzzlement about it, but instead merely let it sink into his vision. It looked very interesting. He wanted to take in everything – the dusty brown of the inner earth revealed like lacerated flesh, the gentle spilling of fine dirt and the way some bits remained tediously clumped, clinging to the sides and doubtlessly ready to tumble with the slightest breeze. He stared a moment longer, probably appearing a decent bit strange himself as he stood motionless atop the hill, seeming to look, from a distance, at nothing in particular.
Then something caught his attention. Stole it, with all the abruptness and force of a mugger. His gaze flicked quickly up to the top of an adjacent hill, whereupon it found something even more bewildering than a crack in the ground. At first, he wasn’t quite sure what he was looking at. All he knew was that it was red, unlike anything he’d ever seen before. Not like flowers or berries or blood. He didn’t know how to describe the color. His eyes widened and surprise shook him from his stagnant position, sparking life into his lithe frame as he shifted, stepping forward some and then leaning, as if it might help him get a better look. It appeared to be… another canine. His ears tilted forward, his jaw falling slack with wonder. Red and black!
For a second more he stared, inching forward another step with his body still leaning forward inquisitively. When he thought about it for a second, he was sure that this other thing had seen him too, and wondered if the caution of another would prevent him from meeting it. He half felt tempted to run after it if it fled. But there he saw it advancing down its perch, and his heart beat faster in his chest, seeming to stifle his air flow as his breaths grew thin with buzzing excitement. Was this some angel? Or a devil maybe? Some supernatural wonder, descended from wherever to bless him with its presence? It paused briefly, as if seeing that he was approaching the same. Nagendra perked, thinking that eyes were upon him, and with his stance still rigid and his blood sizzling with excitement, he began to trot down the hillside.
