In no time at all Rhythm was out of the water and up on the bank. Valentine hung on to Rhythm's scruff for a few beats to make sure her legs were steady, and then he released her and stepped back so he wasn't invading her space too terribly. "Thank you," she said, and Valentine shrugged. It wasn't a big deal, really. His tone warm, he said, "You're very welcome."

Her next comment pulled another shrug from him. "Yeah, we shoulda." Hindsight was 20/20. Eyes glittering, he queried, "Now, about that promised warm up, eh?" Valentine stepped closer, seeking to push the center of his chest against the front of Rhythm's right shoulder. He then leaned forward and sought to groom her neck, aiming to start just below her right ear and methodically work his way down. Occasionally he'd nibble at her fur, working his teeth through the layers for a more thorough grooming.
