The worm lurches violently against the cavern wall, seeming to crippling itself in its panic. It convulses, its condition only worsened by Úlfr's desperate bite- his jaws find purchase, just as a stone comes flying down and strikes Úlfr's muzzle, causing a painful gash that will no doubt scar over. The bite fills his mouth with viscous fluid, the acrid scent filling the cavern.

Gavroche's climbs onto the worm, digging into its putrid flesh, but Gavroche is unable to avoid debris that strikes the right side of his face, causing a deep painful wound across his right eye.

The next thing happens quickly. The beast lurches hard against the tunnel wall again, driving the stalactite deeper into its head. Suddenly the trickle of water turns to a steady stream; dirt and debris go cascading down as water begins to pour in from the ceiling, choking out the worm as it begins to writhe and flail uselessly. Fully debilitated now, it begins to make an effort to burrow down into the soil.

The fleshy substance that pools out of its wounds make it clear it won't survive for long, even if it manages to break away from its attackers.

The worm's massive weight against the unstable wall as it attempts to burrow down makes the hairline fracture grow wider, revealing a breach through the flowing water. Light streams through a jagged opening that seems to lead upward and to the world above.

Crack! The worm slammed into the walls around them, sending rocks cascading down. One struck Úlfr across the top of his muzzle, leaving a deep gash. Blood poured down the sizes of his jaws, mixing in his mouth with the beast's foul taste. Suddenly, water burst into the tunnel, rapidly filling up the space around them. Shit! Úlfr released his hold and scrambled to the side of the cave only to be swept up into the current a moment later.

Panting, he struggled to keep his head above water. He'd used nearly all his strength against the worm and had very little left to fight back against the waves. The crack in the wall widened and he got his last glimpse of light before he was swept further and further into the tunnels. Then everything went dark.
