The sun had risen past the mountain peaks, it's rays slowly reaching through the entrance to the cabin. The young boy stirred as he felt the warmth seep into his fur, causing him to blink his eyes open as he yawned. Though he would see nothing, his world entirely enveloped in darkness. He didn't know what the world around him looked like, what his parents and his siblings looked like. He quietly listened to their voices from the moment he could hear, the boy not speaking at all even as the others squabbled and laughed. Perhaps it was because he had been the one thrown into darkness, lost in a world that he would never get to see it's beauty. He was envious as his brothers grew excited about the sun and the moon, the sky and the stars and the entire world around him. He wished so badly to see what he was missing, to see what others saw. He didn't even know if his parents knew that he was blind, or if they just thought he was slow and dumb.

He curled up even more as he heard the others stirring, pressing himself closer to his mother and pressed his head into the warmth of her fur. Unseeing eyes seemingly watching as his other two siblings bounded out of the den, ears twitching as he heard their footfalls upon the strange sounding structure they called home. When all became silent again, he remained quiet for a long while, and then "Momma?" His voice was barely above a whisper, but almost as inaudible as a mumble as he nosed her side.

Arietta had remained still, allowing Ganta and Shiro to go play when they awoke. They knew better than to leave the ship, and the woman was grateful that she had a pair of smart boys like them. But her last child, Obscoro, worried her. He didn’t play like his brothers did. He didn’t run, laugh, and smile. He didn’t seem to be completely right, and the woman worried for him. Truly worried for him. She would gently nuzzle her baby, licking his head as he spoke.

“What is it, my baby? What’s the matter, Obscoro?” Arietta would speak sweetly to the little one. “Something has been troubling you, hasn’t it?” The woman would curl around her child, tilting her head to th side. “Go ahead and tell me. Mommy will listen.”

She would answer him, little ears tilting forward and back with uncertainty. His mother had always protected him...but would she after he told her something might be wrong with him? There had to be right? His siblings played and laughed and talked about everything they saw, they wouldn't do that if all they saw was...nothing, right? A low whine racked his chest, the boy pressing himself closer to his mother. Unseeing eyes flicked upwards to where he could feel her warm breath, giving off the illusion that he could see...but his gaze wasn't entirely focused, even so, perhaps he was still too young to detect that.

"Is just...um...momma can tell me 'bout the thing in the sky? What is it? Ganta says it's like a big ball of light...what does it do?" He was hesitant to tell her that he wanted to know what it looked like...what everything around him looked like...he thought maybe if he fished for some information about the outside world, that maybe he could picture it all. It was worth a shot, then maybe he wouldn't have to tell mommy that something might be wrong with him. He didn't want her mad or upset or disappointed at him. That would be his worst fear.

Arietta would breathe out softly as her little one spoke. A question about the thing in the sky, huh? The mother would gently lick her son’s little head. “The thing in the sky... I see Ganta wasn’t paying very much attention when I told him what it was when he asked me.” Arietta would give a soft chuckle, letting her eyes close as she thought quietly to herself. Ganta was a sweet kid, but he was always in too much of a hurry to do his own thing.

“It is called the ‘Sun’, Obscoro. The large ball of light keeps the world lit up during the day, so that we might be able to walk around and see things clearly. It’s rays warm up the earth, mingling with the air, and feed the grass and flowers so that they grow. Without the sun they wouldn’t grow at all, and then our prey would have nothing to eat. If our prey had nothing to eat they would die and then we’d have nothing to eat either. In a sense the sun is a source of life for all things.” Arietta would chuckle again.

“I hope I didn’t confuse you, my little one.”

Speech.

The young boy would giggle a bit as she licked his head and commented about his brother. Ganta did always seem to be excited about alot of things, and he wished he could share in that excitement too. He listened quietly as his mother explained what the sun was. He tried to picture it, a big ball of light in the sky...he knew what a ball shape was, his siblings had rolled a snowball before and from his understanding it had no edge, it continued around endlessly. That was how he put it, anyway. The warm part...well, that he could feel. He felt it whenever he was close to being outside, often times it was the warmth and not the light that would wake him up. So the 'sun' was responsible for all of that? One part he frowned at was the light...did the sun hate him? Why did it never want to shine on him?

He was a little puzzled, which brought him to return his gaze back towards his mom. "I understand mama. But what about the other one? The one ganta says is the night light?" He blinked as he peered outside as if he could see it. But he knew it wasn't, the night light was never as warm as the sun light.

He was so curious. There was something a little off about how he was questioning her, but Arietta didn’t push it yet. The mother would continue to happily answer the questions that her son asked her. “Ahh the night light. That is called the moon. The moon is the sun’s opposite, the keeper of the night. It’s light is not warm, and duller, but it helps us see at night and reminds us that the sun will come again. The light is pale so you can look up at the moon’s beauty.” Arietta would chuckle softly. “What’s your favorite thing, Obscoro?” The femme would ask her son gently.

He listened to his mother's explanation of the night light that Ganta talked about. He grew sad inside the more she explained. So it wasn't as bright as the sun...but it helped them see. Why didn't it help him see? Why wasn't he allowed to see how beautiful it was? He remained quiet after she finished, but when she asked him what his favorite thing was, he had to give it some thought. He did enjoy hearing his siblings laugh, and he enjoyed talking to his mom. Other then that, he didn't really do much else to consider as a favorite thing to do.

"I guess my favorite thing is hearing Ganta and the others laugh. It makes me happy to hear them laugh." He smiled at her, tail beating steadily on the wooden surface of the ground before steadily slowing to a stop. Brows furrowed as he glanced at his paws, sadness overtaking him. "Mommy...does the moon and sun hate me? Why can't I see the moons beauty, or see their light? Did I do something wrong? Was I bad?"

Arietta would frown some as her son continued on. The first part should have made her esmile, but there was something about how Obscoro said it that made her feel saddened. She could sense his emotions, and his next words made her realize something. Her baby was blind. His eyes were deceiving... But.. Arietta would sigh deeply, shaking her head. How could she explain to the child that he had done nothing wrong, that blindness was just a thing you were born with, without upsetting him further?

“Obscoro... I don’t know if I can fully answer that question. But...” Arietta would pause for but a moment. “Though you can’t see, you are fortunate in some respects. You don’t need to lay your eyes on the evil of this world, and see the wrongs others commit to each other. You can hide those horrible images away...” Arietta would close her eyes.

“I envy you, Obscoro. There are some things I wish I’ve never seen.”
