Critical Hit!
04-21-2018, 09:34 AM (This post was last modified: 04-21-2018, 09:36 AM by Malleus.)
Malleus followed the path of carnage slowly. He didn't know what was doing this, but he aimed to find out. If the Abraxas were going to have an outpost in these parts they couldn't tolerate the presence of such a wasteful, destructive beast. His aim was to find it and should it be necessary, destroy it. His family might have been bent on conquest, but even they had their limits. This damage, the many mangled animals, the damaged trees...this was wanton and pointless. For sport. It disgusted him.

A noise up ahead, a crackling as claws scraped stone, gave him pause. Malleus heard a snort and a guttural chuff, and his hackles rose. The beast was near.

Did he approach or did he seek help? He didn't know what he was dealing with, but whatever it was, it was huge and it was powerful.

Malleus has a barbary macaque companion named Pascal. Unless he is mentioned IC it's safe to assume he's not with Malleus.

Freedom! It made her heart sing as she moved further and further into Boreas. Pyralis had grown restless once again and decided that it was time for her to start making use of herself as a spy though she couldn't quite find interest in exploring any of the mortal packs just yet. For now she wanted to do a bit of wandering herself, for her own enjoyment. Pyralis remembered her earlier treks north into the frigid domains of the snowy north. Once upon a time she'd made it a goal to explore all of the north before the family had opted to settle in Auster.

The sharp, acrid scent of blood and guts caught her attention and her eyes narrowed as she spied a very messy kill not far off. Already carrion birds were gathered, picking at it. Next to it were more kills, a slew of them!  She began to follow the trail when in the distance, to her surprise was Malleus. She grinned and moved swiftly toward him.  "By the fallen god, I hope you weren't responsible for that mess, Malleus." It had been a silly little jest to hide a growing nervous tension in her belly.

A sudden crackling noise caused her to immediately fall silent. What the heck was that? Her eyes narrowed as she scented the wind.  She did not like this at all.

Please note that Pyralis is a ghost. It is up to you to decide what level your chars can see/hear her. She was killed by having her throat ripped apart. At times the wound may be visible and be actively bleeding.

Hear ye!  Hear ye! Beware her Ladyship, her Excellence (etc. ad infinitum), Captain Pyralis Abraxas.  Thread with at yer own risk!  This cutthroat savage stands accused though not convicted of heinous crimes including murder, maiming, brawling, cursing, kidnapping and an unspeakable event involving a newt, two coyotes and a distressed potoo.  Ye've been warned!

Brute had been making his rounds through The Rock Garden, testing his Autumn traps and their durability should he come across any without signs of success. He immediately noticed the carnage left behind by something all too familiar to him, a bear. And, from the looks of the nearly indistinguishable corpses of coyote, wolf, sheep.. practically everything out here in the Garden, Elias could not leave without finding it and taking it down.

He had taken down a bear before, with his pack.. however.. he hadn't brought anyone with him to The Rock Garden for this trip. He had never run into predators like this before out here, but it made him all the more excited for what was to come this winter. He had plans to establish his home in the mountains that rested above this garden, and he'd be damned he allowed a bear to get in the way of them.

He heard the same grunting that reached Malleus' ears and ran in its direction, his eyes taking in the site of the wolf standing atop stone and the white bear coming out from the line of trees at the base of the mountain. His eyes widened, he'd never seen a bear quite so large or so pale.. but that would not deter him. It may not be like the bears of his homeland, but that would not deter him from helping this man bring it down. Another wolf appeared to show herself and Elias only felt all the more confident.

Pyralis' timing was perfect. He could think of few others he'd want to face this creature with. His aunt may have been brash but what she lacked in seriousness she more than made up for in prowess. "Not I," he said with a soft chuckle that died quickly as Malleus spotted a great white shape emerging from the treeline. That was the biggest bear he'd ever seen. It dwarfed the mutant bear he'd fought with his father.

His expression serious, Malleus nodded in the approaching behemoth's directions. "What say you, Pyr? Shall we have a go?" His eyes briefly strayed from the bear to movement he saw out of the corner of his eye. It was a mortal wolf - one who seemed to be as keen to engage the bear as he was. Malleus nodded to him to let him know he wouldn't be fighting alone.

The bear, seeing the wolves gathering, strode purposely towards them. It huffed angrily; its small beady eyes glittering with malicious intent.

Malleus stole one final look at Pyralis before slipping forward. He had no desire to wait until the behemoth was upon him to engage. No, he wanted to begin the assault on his terms. To make the bear zero in on him, Malleus ran at it with a snarl. Once he closed the distance to about 20 feet he gave up the direct approach and began to arc around the bear. The idea was to make the bear turn its back on the other two wolves. If they each took turns distracting it, the other two would be able to sneak in close and wound it.

Intent on bringing about his demise, the bear followed Malleus' movements hungrily. To keep it from getting too close Malleus matched each step forward with a step back. He couldn't keep this up for long...

Pyralis' ears flicked back, her hackles raising as low, warning growl rumbled from her throat at the site of a truly massive polar bear. Her nostrils flared but she could not detect any signs of sickness. Had it simply wandered this far in search of food to fatten up for the coming winter?

"What say you, Pyr? Shall we have a go?"

Pyralis turned to her nephew with a wicked grin. "I think we shall. I smell no signs of sickness and it does not appear to be rabid." She noticed another large male but didn't think to much beyond they would need all the help they could get. She followed her nephew's lead and also nodded with a grin on her face. Her defenses would fly up in moments, her shoulders rolling elegantly forward, neck scrunching back as her fur stood on end. Her tail streamed out behind her for balance as Malleus made the first move.

Her golden eyes tracked her nephew, his snarl immediately drew the bears attention and as he began to arc around it the bear followed with a roar, great paws sweeping towards the young king. In a burst of speed she charged, no sound slipping from her lips as she tried to keep herself undetected. Her head would twist sharply to her right as she zeroed in on the bear's left hind leg her jaws digging into the flesh over the achilles' tendon. It roared in pain and she shook her head as violently as she could, seeking to rip through the flesh and to do as much damage as possible as it turned on her. With a little luck it's back would be to Malleus and if she was extra lucky she'd damage the tendon and slow it down for the boys.

Claws raced for her head as she released the bear and scrambled back, the claws just nicking the left side of her head, flecking the snow with more blood.

Bears were undoubtedly the biggest threat to wolves across Boreas, as cougars were dangerous but not quite as intimidating to take down as full grown, territorial bears. Bears were smart, too.. and smart fighters. They were lazy and didn't want to move around much during their fight, but that's what made fighting overly aggressive bears even more fun- provoking their fatasses to actually move around and work for the fight.

Elias nearly smirked as he thought about this, watching the colossal white bear come out into full view and begin to face Malleus. Would they manage to piss this bear off to that point today? Where even if it became exhausted, it still fought to the death to try to get a good hit on these wolves. Well, it didn't have a choice really. Elias wasn't leaving until this thing was dead, and if the other wolves in his company saw any of the same carnage he did on their way here- he had his doubts that they were any less likely to let this bear get through the night alive.

Elias watched as these two wolves seemed to be familiar with one another. He had half a mind to keep his distance and observe their strategy. They likely knew how to hunt with each other already, and Elias would do his best to observe and blend in. They both seemed quick on their feet, and the female exercised a perfected use of stealth and speed to snip that Achilles' heel and get away unscathed. He felt a little more confident in the company of the wolves fate handed him to accompany taking down this bear with, and he began to side-step in line with the back end of the bear as it turned to face Pyralis.

Elias loved the Rock Garden for several reasons. One being that his traps were littered across the territory, and two being that the rocks that stood tall in the garden seemed to offer particularly useful vantage points. His eyes narrowed as they studied one closest to the bear, it seemed to be just slightly taller than the bear's shoulder height - but sort of narrow in width and angled just a little too steep. Elias had confidence in his ability to climb it, however, as the steep volcano walls and cliffs scattered around the plateau had been the training grounds of his youth. The tall wolf began to crouch, his stance turning into a ground-hugging crawl as his wide chest hovered barely over the soil. Once he felt like he was out of view of the bear's line of eyesight, his body came up and sacrificed stealth for speed as he ran full speed toward the stone.

It looked like the colossal beast was preoccupied for the moment, its aggression set on the female wolf for the attack she'd just made. It watched her, and kept moving- the bear seemed to have his back toward Malleus and the stone Elias had chosen to climb, which was perfect for what the man had in mind. Talons and toes gripped against the stone texture beneath them as Elias' long and well-muscled limbs worked to carry him quickly up that natural staircase. He used his momentum to make up for his weight as he rushed up the stone. He couldn't stop or he'd start to slide backward and there was no point in that, so he took a quite literal leap of faith.

Elias wasn't a quiet creature. Adrenaline soared through his veins and an irresistible urge to give in to the high the hunt gave him overcame him. A growl left his throat as he watched his body come down on to the bear's backside, his mouth hanging wide open and eager all the while. Teeth snapped at the tallest bit of flesh he could reach and he managed to latch on to the bear's fat deposits over its shoulders. Blood trickled into his mouth as his jaws clenched together tight, preparing themselves for the pull of his body weight. His toes scrambled to anchor themselves in the bear's fur, his talons disappearing into the sea of white as they dug themselves in. He managed to reduce the pull of his weight on his bite enough that his jaws managed to keep a hold on it strong enough for him to remain on top of the bear, for now.

The muscles in his core tensed as his legs and forelimbs took their turns scratching into the hide of the bear- all the while his teeth pulling and gnawing on the flesh of the bear's shoulders. He hoped to annoy the bear even further, perhaps distract it with an immediate need to get the man off its' back enough so that the other two could have an opportunity to attack literally any point on the bear that they so pleased.

OOC: if either of you are interested, Malleus would be happy to tend to any wounds they get during the fight.

The bear was faster than Malleus had anticipated. It charged him suddenly as he tried to keep its attention away from the other two wolves, and he barely managed to skitter out of its reach before Pyralis latched onto its leg. Immediately - and to Malleus' relief - the bear's attention turned to his aunt. The titan put several yards between himself and the bear before turning back to take the situation in.

As he waited for the perfect moment to sneak in and launch his own attack, the unknown mortal male made a daring leap onto the bear's back. The attack gave Malleus the cover he needed to fly in undetected. In an attempt to rid itself of its attacker the polar bear started snapping at Elias and thrashing around. It curled in on its left side to do so which left it blind to what was happening on its right side.

Seizing the opportunity, Malleus darted forward and seized the bear's right front leg at the wrist. He was quick and he was merciless; his teeth sinking through the thick fur and skin to tear at the tendons below. Hopefully having a damaged leg on either side would slow the bear down.

The damage was done in a matter of seconds. Once it was done Malleus peeled off and raced away. He'd learned enough from the last bear fight to know he didn't want to be within reach when the bear turned around.

You Made Me A Believer

The sting of pain and the blood dripping from her chin thrilled her. She watched the beast stumble, pleased with the damage she'd done to the achilles tendon. Even so she couldn't help but feel respect for the great beast. It moved with a truly unanticipated speed. She shuffled back, watching the men to see what they would do and then calculate her moves from there to be sure she wouldn't get in the way. She watched as the scarred stranger charged at the bear with a ferocious growl, seizing onto the beasts shoulders. It roared and thrashed. Pyralis eyed her point of attack, her limbs coiling under her as she prepared to spring.

She watched as Malleus tore into the creatures right foreleg. Her limbs uncoiled as she launched herself at the left side of the bears neck just as it turned toward Malleus. She leapt her, arms wrapping around it's neck as her fangs cut into the creatures throat, just behind the jawbone. Pyralis thrashed her head violently while tucking her tail and drawing her hind legs up to her body as close as she could to minimize how much of her was a target. In this position she was safe from the jaws but she under-estimated the bear's response. It thrashed, it's left forepaw aiming right for her. Pyralis let go and managed to shift to avoid the claws but the beasts left foreleg still caught her and sent her flying through the air. The blow knocked the air from her lungs as she landed hard on her back. Whump! Shaking herself she quickly got to her her feet.

Please note that Pyralis is a ghost. It is up to you to decide what level your chars can see/hear her. She was killed by having her throat ripped apart. At times the wound may be visible and be actively bleeding.

OOC: Elias might need it. ROFL.

Elias' persistence was truly something remarkable, his jaws never once releasing their vice of a hold on the flesh of the bear's shoulders. He could hear the other wolves running around the beast, making their attacks. He could feel the bear jerking, swatting and sidestepping in an angry frustration to get the titanic wolf off of him. Then he heard the loud thwap that the bear hit one of them with, and the inevitable whomp of her landing. He remembered that feeling, the impact of a bear's paw. They were strong creatures, and he only hoped she'd managed to avoid the claws.

It was like the scar on his chest was coming to life, fueling his heart with a revitalized need for vengeance. He loathed these creatures with a deeply seeded passion, something Ruina wolves were once known for. His toes still gripped into the fur of the bear, talons embedded into the skin to the best of their abilities. He could feel it moving around beneath him with a purpose and his muscles tensed as he braced himself for what he suspected was coming next.

With the bear's front paw freshly wounded, it was held up close to his chest. With his back Achilles' tendon severed, his weight was forced to primarily rest his weight on the other side. Elias growled as he lunged deeper into his bite while the beast was still level, resecuring his hold. The polar bear matched his growl and released a frustrating roar just before attempting to stand on his back legs, weight favoring the side of his good one. Elias could barely adjust to this steep of an incline, his toes desperately scratching at the back of the bear to try and find leverage for him to support his weight on. He was slipping.

His jaws could not hold his entire weight and eventually started to tear out of their hold, and Elias was succumbing to the will of gravity quite quickly. At one final attempt to do damage to the ursine's back, he thrashed his skull side to side and ripped through whatever flesh he could just before his teeth disconnected with those shreds entirely. His talons scraped along the back to try and slow his fall, creating bleeding vales left behind by each one. When he landed, it was hardly with any grace.

Elias' back paws connected with the earth first, but his weight coming down on top of them barely had enough foundation. He fell on to his left side, but it seemed he was not the only one having balancing issues. The bear teetered in front of him, a towering giant trying to support his whole weight haphazardly on his good paw. Elias' eyes went wide as he realized what was happening, his limbs scrambling to find their placement beneath him. He barely managed to get to his paws when the weight of the bear came crashing down on top of his hips, immediately slamming him down into the grass.

His front limbs worked to pull him out from underneath the beast, digging into the earth and desperately trying to overcome the weight- but it was too great. For now, at least, Elias was trapped.

Once out of harm's way Malleus spun around to reengage. A lot had happened in those few short seconds his back was turned. He turned back just in time to see Pyralis go flying and couldn't help but cringe as she landed hard. Ever the stoic, Pyralis was up in a heartbeat.

In the meantime, the unnamed mortal was creating a predicament of his own. The bear balanced precariously on its hind legs and for a moment as he circled the beast Malleus thought it might right itself, but the damage done to its hind leg was too great. His eyes widened as he took the situation in. It was like he was watching it in slow motion; the bear toppling backwards and the mortal laying sprawled out below.

Instinctively Malleus darted forward as the bear fell. He could see it now; the chance to put an end to it all before one of them lost their life to this beast. Pyralis had done a number on the bear - the steady flow of blood from its throat was proof enough. If he was fast and fortunate he could sink his teeth into the wound she created and hopefully kill the behemoth.

In a heartbeat Malleus was on the bear. Following the furrows Pyralis' teeth had created, his teeth sank into its throat with ease. He bit deeper, his jaws closing with all the force he could muster, and began to thrash his head from side to side hard enough shake his whole upper body. The bear, sensing the end was near unless it acted fast, began to swat at him with its uninjured front leg. It struck him once, its claws raking down his left shoulder, but he couldn't be shaken so easily, and then, as the bear's situation grew more dire ans it became more desperate, its blows fell more rapidly. Even though Malleus sidestepped he couldn't completely escape the claws while still maintaining his stranglehold.

The pain was searing, but he refused to let go. Malleus wouldn't let go until he was certain it was dead.

OOC: I left the end a bit vague in case you guys wanted to keep going. Otherwise we can say Mal succeeded in killing it c:

ooc: I'm good with Mal killing it. Really either way works for me.

Pyralis coughed and shuddered as the pain radiated around her ribcage. She knew her body was severely bruised from being thrown like a ragdoll but at the sharp pangs in the left side of her back made her wonder if she'd managed to crack a rib. There was no time to think on it and she still had the adrenaline rushing through her veins to help with the pain. The boys were having a good go at it. She felt herself wanting to cheer with each successful bite, and when the bear fell she charged forward, seeking to help the others take advantage of the situation, wounded or not but it seemed Malleus had it well under control.

As the beast fell it fell right into Malleus' open jaws, cutting the wound in the bears throat deeper, sending the blood spilling out and spraying across the snow as he thrashed. "Yes! Get him Malleus!" She would leave him to the task. As she skirted around the back side of the bear she noticed that the mortal man was pinned beneath the thrashing creature. Not good! Not good! She bolted forward and attempted to seize the man by his scruff, hopping to time her pulling as the bear twisted and thrashed so that she could help the man slip out from under the bear when its weight wasn't so much up on him. Then they could assist her nephew in killing the thing.
