Aspen Wreckage

Today the young traveler decided to take a more northern root in hopes of escaping the suffocating grip of the heat that clenched the southern lands in a deadly hold. Raven hues danced in the wind as Aspen moved across the land, heading to no particular destination until she saw them. Trees of gargantuan proportions sticking up out of the ground like mountains, even at a fair distance, Aspen knew this would be a trip she would not soon forget. As she approached, the trees only grew taller, wider, looking more like mountains than the mountains did until finally she stood on the outskirts of the forest, neck craned upward to search to the top of the tree. She couldn't even see it. Her jaw was slightly ajar, stuck in amazement as she let the scene before her sink in. These trees were huge! Sure, she had seen some decently sized pines and oaks in her days, but this was something else entirely. Even more astounding yet, was her knowledge of tree age in correspondence to height. Some of the elders would tell her how the trees of their youth stood taller than all the others in the forest now, because they were as old as the elders. But those trees? Those trees didn't stand a chance against these, which meant they were older than the elders, and just judging by the shear size of them, she was guessing a lot older.

Ylva was, rather unusually, having a wonderful time. Asgeira had brought them at last to a terrain in which the red panda far outclassed the wolf. The tiny creature was more at home among the branches than Aggie would ever be, so she scampered around while the painted wolf made her way carefully along the largest trunks. Still, the wolf wasn't jealous of her friend. She had brought them here specifically for this reason, so she smiled as she watched Ylva leap up to clamber through the smaller branches around them. "Are these oaks? See if you can find me any acorns!" Ylva smiled and nodded, and disappeared from sight.

Aggie paused and sat. She was dizzyingly high above the ground, but she had reasonable faith that the spirits would keep her in place. Or at least if a stiff gust toppled her over, she would die knowing she must have deserved it somehow. We'll just hope it doesn't come to that. She had lost herself in the whispering leaves when Ylva burst suddenly back into view. "There's someone else here, look!" She sprang back onto Aggie's branch and led her lower, crossing onto another tree entirely before she caught sight of the darker hued strange. She seemed to be enjoying the sights. "Believe it or not, the view is even better from up above," Aggie called out, hoping her voice sounded friendly. "How's your balance?" She smiled, waiting to see if the woman would be able to find her among the branches above.

With her necked craned in the way it was, she was surprised to not have noticed a wolf hiding among the branches before she spoke. Though, Aspen had to admit, it was a bit odd seeing a wolf so high off the ground, scampering across the branches like one of the squirrels. Still, the raven girl offered a smile as she walked closer to the other female. "I don't doubt it, but how on earth did you get yourself up there?" Naturally, her mind was thinking of the most direct route, like what most tiny woodland creatures would think of; just jumping on the trunk and climbing her way up! But when Aspen climbed onto the base of the tree, standing on her hind legs and pawing at the wood, she soon discovered that she completely lacked the ability to climb like those other forest sprites.

Craning her head up once again at the offer of joining the woman in the trees, Aspen smile widened as she glanced around the giant pines. "I think I could manage, as long as you promise there's another way down besides falling?" Getting up seemed impossible enough, she didn't need to get all the way up there just to get stuck! But it seemed this stranger knew a thing or two about the mountainous trees, and Aspen had faith that she would once again find her feet on the ground. But the idea of being suspended high above the earth, it was already causing her brain to spin. What would the world look like from up there? How much more could she see from those heights? And then another, more humorous thought crossed her mind; I could live like a chipmunk up there. It was silly enough to have her snickering to herself softly while she waited for the woman in the trees to show her the way.
