Balsam may have been a man on a mission, but even he wasn't immune to the awe inspiring spectacle taking place in the plains. So captivating was the cloud of firefly light that he abandoned the safety of the neighboring grove to investigate. Going against instinct and the teaching of his elders, Balsam stood in the open.
Never before had he seen such a sight. The night sky alone was breath-taking, but it was the sea of fireflies that stole the show. They hovered over the grass and flew en masse across the field, their aerial acrobatics not unlike the movements of a flock of birds. So synced were their movements that their combined light ebbed and flowed like water across the sky.
The young Songa didn't know what to make of it. Their dance was hypnotizing and watching them move was a deeply spiritual experience. He didn't feel like a fortunate passerby, but rather a participant somehow, almost as if his role was to bear witness.
After a beat he decided it was a good sign. The spirits were with him and perhaps showing their approval or pointing him in the right direction. How could something so beautiful be anything other than a blessing?
