The Open Road
She blinked back the bright sunlight as she moved away from the confines of the den. They were still restricted to the Rapids, though they were warned to be even more careful of the rushing water. It was becoming dangerously high with the spring melt.
Poem was quite tired of being warned of all the dangers she might encounter. Nothing bad had ever happened in her short life and she was quite sure the adults in her life were all over reacting.
The slate marked girl padded her way towards the Rapids, near the rocky outcropping she could sometimes find her father frequenting. He was missing from his place today, but something interesting remained. A sharpened antler had started to sink into the oversaturated earth, but around it herbs had started to erupt. Poem studied them quietly, trying to see if she could identify them compared to the dried herbs she did know.
Spring hit the rapids like a refreshing breeze. The snow melted and blossoms of life came forth. Theory was happier with each day. All the babe knew was the chill of winter and this was her first experience of warmth and she loved it! Who wouldn't? There was no more frost nor the sting of icy paw pads. Snow no longer clung to her obsidian fur. She was free to frolic. Though, due to it being so early in the season the evenings in particular were still fairly chilly. Nothing like the previous season, thankfully.
Theory was still confined to the rapids under the adults orders and she was not one to defy rules. After Verse's disobedience all the pups were being cracked down on. With so many care takers like Epitaph and Vail they were always being watched. It would only be silly to try and sneak off. Theory did not think the risks were worth any rewards. Thus, she decided to wander around in the confinements of the rapids with glee. All the pup wanted to do was explore!
As the explorative pup stepped cumbersomely through the warmth she seemed to perk up as a scent filled her inky nose. Steps stopped and Theory looked around for the source of the smell. Suddenly baby blue eyes fell upon her half-sister, Poem! A little yip of joy came forth and her stump of a tail started going wild. Theory trotted her way towards the lighter toned pup with a beaming smile. Poem seemed to be focused downward and Theory was sure not to spook her. Step slowed at about four feet away and gleeful words were emitted. "Hello Poem! Whatcha' lookin' at?"
"Hello, Theory." She returned with a bright smile, quite unaware of how somber this place was meant to be. "I was looking at these herbs, wondering if I knew what they were." whenever she was in Vail's presence she was asking questions about her stores. The pup was even more excited now, with spring she would be able to go out and collect her own cache.
"What are you out doing?" She asked in return, did her sister want to go on an adventure? Would she be able to convince her across the border of the rapids into the thicket or the plains?
The fluffy black and white stump of a tail was going hay wire as it 'wagged' upon Theory's rump. Excitement seemed to pour from her form as her half-sister exchanged a pleasant greeting. It was nice to be able to spend time with Poem without Noir being around. Due to the radiating positivity Theory beheld it was hard for her to express much distaste for her larger brother, but it was evident he was quite rude. The large babe had to protect Verse far too often.
Theory listened intently as her baby blue optics flicked down at the herbs her sister had mentioned. A curious brow raised in silent response before chipper vocals came forth. "I am not familiar with those herbs.." The babe leaned down to get a good sniff of the herbs before shaking her head. "Sorry I can't help ya' too much." With a shrug she perked up as Poem asked a question. "I am explorin'. Who can resist the warm weather?!" A pause. "Whatcha wanna do?
She didn’t know what they were, going as far as taking a big sniff. Poem looked at them a little closer, eyeing one plant in particular. She sniffed its barely there purple blossoms that covered the stem in an almost cat tail appearance. The girl reached out a curious paw to touch the plant and brought it back to her nose.
”It smells like your mom.” She told her playmate for the day. ”I think.. its lavender?” She wasn’t sure about the name, but she was sure Tana almost always smelled like it.
”Theory.” She said seriously, looking into her sister’s brilliant sapphire gaze. ”Will you come with me to explore the thicket?”
