Lament Pyre

It was late in the day, and the young warrior was just returning from his jog through the rogue lands of Boreas. He was slowly becoming familiar with the names and places around Legion. Familiar for the first time, he believed. The lack of familiarity or deja vu hinted that he had never been here before, but of course, he was far from certain.

He stopped outside of Legion, not yet ready to enter, as sunset blossomed in the sky above him. The blood red tones of the sinking sun cast shadows upon the woods he roamed in, deepening the reds that washed through his coat.

He began his cool down exercises, pushing his body through motions that were more familiar to him then the people that had taught them to him. Something about muscle memory, seemed to holder greater sway in what remained of who he had once been. He could recall no places, no faces, and no names. Yet here he was, moving through a dance that he could form with his body, and not name with his tongue.

Strange, how the mind worked.

The light was almost completely gone when he was done, and he stretched his limber body, shook out his coat, and looked towards Legion. He really had no reason left to linger outside of its borders.

Eris Pyre

Twilight was her least favorite time of day. At least at night she knew what she was up against, but the frail rays of sun in the evening played tricks on her worsening vision. Shapes lurched and shifted as she trod along, following a familiar scent. She knew his scent as well as she knew her own - it was musky and thick, reminding her of days long gone. They were practically littermates. Eris had depended on him! And yet he had left, just like her mother. The female was quietly furious, but true to her Ademre training, her face was neutral. Her eyes betrayed nothing, as always, staring vacantly ahead. There was nothing to make sense of any more. Everything was shapes and colors. It was more important to pick out the smells and sounds.

There! Eris paused and lifted her tail, lowering her nose to the ground. She stepped forward carefully, placing each paw thoughtfully as she scented the grass. Lament was beneath the sweet, sickly smell of rotting fruit. Tor, why did he cross this wretched field? The scent of fruit was so heavy she could almost hear it. The crossing of her senses was becoming more common as the world she could see around her narrowed - smells were loud and there were noises she could taste. She caught the barest whiff of him, musky beneath the fermenting sugars, and took off at a sprint. The last of the dying light guided her without incident through the trees. As it began to fade to darkness and she lost all hope of sight, Lament's scent grew stronger.

She crashed through the undergrowth, her tail flagging high. His scent was all she could smell, he had to be close! The sun dipped beneath the horizon and Eris' world snapped out of existence. But he was so near... she didn't slow, careening onward at a clip. She threw her muzzle to the sky and howled joyously. It was totally uncharacteristic of their training, but she couldn't resist. It had been so long, and she had been so lonely.

With a graceless thud, Eris tripped over a rogue pile of apples. The spoiled fruit covered her fur, adding to the twigs, leaves, and dirt that had already braided themselves into the longer hair at her neck, shoulders, and back. Eris, breathing hard, rolled to her paws and braced herself. She took a moment to reorient herself. After shaking out her fur, the smell of apples subsided - and suddenly, she knew exactly where she was. Despite the obstacles she had faced, she'd made it. The small, leggy female didn't need her eyes to know Lament was in the same clearing - she could smell it, taste it, feel it in her bones. She rushed him. Eris pressed her head deep into his shoulder, running her skull continuously underneath his chin. "Lament, I missed you! Lament, I was lost without you... I followed your scent for so long... Lament Lament Lament... We can seek our fortune together! I do not take up much space..." Mostly, she repeated his name over and over.

A howl ripped through the fading day, the sweet song of it called to to him, woke something inside of him. He felt a rush of emotion, but without the imagery to go with it he felt lost and confused. Who called to him? It didn't matter, all that mattered was the fact that they had finally found him. His people. This was it, their days of being lost where over. The haunting confusion, the questions. The teasing hints if what they had lost, without the answers to follow.

He stood tall, ears tilted, straining to hear the wolf even theough her song had finished. His eyes scanned the world around him, seeing ripe fruit trees and splashes of color. Where was she? His sweet answer. Would he know her when he saw her? Would she unlock the part of him that he had struggled with all these days .

When he found her, he would see her in tones of black, eyes like bloodied jewels, frosted and without focus as she careened towards him. She did not slow, and he braced himself to take on the weight of this tiny, petite creature.

He let out a soft oof as she landed, and then her paw was on his, tapping out emotion. Her voice, like liquid honey was whispering his name. He lifted his paw and gently folded it around her own, listening to the familairit of the gestures she made there. He knew her, he knew her like a sunrise. She was his sister, was she not?
Dammit. What was her name. It was there, it had to be.

Then his paw would try to sigh from beneath the onslaught of the message she tapped upon his paw. He felt fondness for the motion, the familiarity of it. Her milky eyes and gesture told him... reminded him? That her sight was limited. But she did not need to tap on his paw, he was not the one who could not see.

But.. her name.. the sigh was for her name, which as he thought hard about his lost sister, would return to him. "Amaretto" he breathed her name softly, put his nose into the coat beside her ear. "You found us, we are lost no longer."

Eris Pyre

He towered over her, but she found only comfort in his presence. Eris was used to being the smallest in a group, but with the Ademre, she had never felt weak. The she-wolf leaned on him, knowing that he would willingly support her weight. She was no burden to him. His warmth was the closest thing she had to home in these strange lands. Although she had gotten good at tracking - she had had to, under the duress of her siblings' departure - this place was still foreign. Could you ever know a place without seeing it? The thought troubled her. If it was true, she would soon come to know nothing - except this, the feeling of warmth from Lament's body, and the overwhelming smell of him. She could taste it. This was knowing.

"Amar... etto?" Eris murmured, her voice tinged with upset. Her disappointment was twofold: Lament didn't seem to recognize her, and her sisters were not with him either. In fact, the way he said their sister's name, it was possible she was missing. Eris made a soft noise in the back of throat, somewhere between a whine and a keen. "I'm - can't you - don't you remember me?" She breathed, struggling not to cry. After a moment, Eris leaned into the sadness and wept into his neck. "It's Eris, it's me, please - just, just breathe... Just take in my scent, please. It's stronger than sight. It's stronger than memory!" If anyone knew the power of scent and touch over sight, it was her.

"Where are the others? I thought I would find you together!" Eris whimpered, her tail tucked between her legs. If she crouched, the female could practically crawl underneath the larger male. In a different time, in a different place, she might have done just that. There were times when her size was a comfort - it allowed her to be closer to the Ademre than she otherwise would. Some of her fondest memories were of cold winter nights, curled into a pile with Lament, Ballad, and Amaretto, on top of and underneath and practically inside of one another. You could hardly tell where one of them began and the others ended. She longed for simpler times, surrounded on all sides by her family. There were no wrong turns when you walked shoulder-to-shoulder with the only creatures you trusted.

Lament Pyre

He held the tiny wolf close, feeling a familiar surge of protective love washing over him. There was no doubt about it, he knew this wolf. What else could that make her but family? She knew the language of the Ademre, and feeling her tapping paw on his skin, reading the emotion in that language he knew, was a comfort. He had Ballad, and he would have been a lot more lost if he hadn’t had her at his side, but this proof that their culture and family existed.. It warmed his heart.

When his sister repeated her name, her voice tinged with worry and upset, he would pause. He held her close, drumming out emotions on her paw, there was no need to pull back, to see her better, because their communication was done better in this form of close contact.
ah
She clicked too easily that his memory was faulty, and he knew he had done something wrong. His paw murmured gently against her comfort, love, sorrow in apology for what he had forgotten.

“Eris?” he whispered gently, saying the name aloud, in the hopes that it would help him. “The others?” he would ask then, worry, alarm his paw told her. “Amaretto.. Where is she?” man, his brain was on fire, he winced at the pain of it, the struggle to put together the jumble of his memories. They flooded him, but not in tandem. Not in any way that made sense.

He did as she asked, closing her eyes and breathing in the scent of her. It made him think of home, even if he wasn’t certain right now where that was. It brought the memories of darkness and warmth and love. how many sisters do I have? he wondered as he held her close, and used her scent to steady himself. “I.. Ballad is here, in the pack lands. Something happened to us Eris, I believe we were attacked. Can you tell me anything you know, Little Sister? Where is home, and why did we leave it. Who where we with?’ he asked of her. He wanted to know so much more than just this, but here was the highlights, this was important. his paw drummed a steady stream of emotion to her, calming emotions, gentle ones, encouraging ones. He knew she must be shocked to here this, and as frightened as she and Ballad where when they first awoke.

Eris Pyre

He repeated her name, but there was an emptiness to it. It was clear that just consonants and vowels would not be enough to repair whatever damage had been done. Eris' ears saddled, her sadness palpable - it was written clearly in her body language and in the tapping upon Lament's paws. Mourning, confusion, sadness she wrote hurriedly. They were some of the very first words she learned in Ademic after being taken in by their teacher. It was an exercise to help explore her feelings of abandonment. Eris hadn't felt this bereft since she was a pup.

"I don't know," Eris confessed, feeling helpless. "You all left with our teacher on a training exercise... you were supposed to be back in just a few sunrises, but I was so lonely! I followed you a few hours after you left. Once you left the area I was used to patrolling, I got lost." She was bitterly disappointed in herself. Without help navigating, Eris often didn't have the confidence to proceed. It had taken her the better part of a day to reorient herself once she had been turned around. Once she caught their scent again, they were long gone from the area. All she could do was doggedly pursue their weakening trail. "Once your scents began to diverge, I had to pick one to follow closely or I never would have made it this far."

As Lament asked after home, the ground seemed to drop out from underneath her. Eris felt herself growing faint and leaned on him even further to remain upright. The waning sunlight had finally left the orchard, leaving her adrift in darkness. "Lament... if you don't know where home is, neither do I. The scent is old now, I can't retrace my steps." And I can't see well enough, even in the daylight, to make out any familiar landscapes. The unspoken sentence hung between them. If he didn't remember her, if he didn't even recall their homeland... what was wrong with him? And what could she possibly do to help? Unless they restored his fractured memories, they didn't have a chance of returning to their homeland. If she closed her eyes, she could picture the bright Sword Tree in full bloom - but that was all she had, disparate images in her head. Nothing could be stitched together to form a map. They were little more than snatches of color and beauty resigned to memory.

The lament of loss she tapped against his paw tore at his heart. He knew he was hurting her. She wasnt coming to his memories in any sort of clarity, and he was letting her down. He latched onto her words when she spoke them, ears perked as he simply listened. Teacher? All of you? He felt these where important pieces of the puzzle, through she was quick to go on about how she was lonely and had followed them. Why had she not been apart of the training excersise? Ahh, her eyes, that had to be it.
"Who is 'we' Little Whisper?" He asked of her, the nickname slipping out without concious thought, the way his errant memories seem to pop into existence.

Did he have other siblings out there? What of this Amaretto, who's name he had recalled, but not her face, not the wolf behind the name. He sighed and buried his head further into her coat, thinking hard. "Ballad is here in Legion, and she will be so excited to see you. What of amaretto. Was she with us?" And where was their teacher, where they dead? His heart slipped a beat in fear for friends and siblings he didnt know.

How had they gone from a simple training excersise, to waking up abandoned and lost in the battlefield. He felt like he was missing something, and dammit it was frustrating. His paw moved to display his frustration, his questions and worry, without thinking about it. Once he caught himself, he let his paw fall still. Their little sister didnt need his worries on top of her own.

Eris Pyre

"The three of you left together," Eris whispered, her brow furrowed. "You're... Amaretto is our sister. You, Ballad, Amaretto and I - we're family." It was true that Eris wasn't blood related to the other three, but she didn't want to further confuse him. He seemed to slowly be piecing information together, but it was obvious that he was still distressed - maybe even in pain. To feel and hear him hurt was to experience the hurt herself. The closer she pressed her body to his, the more pain and confusion she felt.

"Oh, Ballad! Please, we must go to her," Eris begged. They were stronger together. As he continued to mime his frustration, Eris licked at his chin and pressed her head harder against his chest. "We'll figure it out together."

“Family.” he agreed softly, pressing a comforting kiss into the back of her head. He might have lost his memories of her, but the feelings were still there. He felt warmth and love. He knew he was protective of this little wolf. She held a lot of answers for him, but he was patient, and didn’t pesture her with all he wished to know. He didn’t ask her about the tree that haunted his dreams, or their parents, their culture. Where home was, through she already admitted she wasn’t certain how to head home.

“Yes, i’ll call to her.” Lament agreed. He couldn’t take Eris across pack lands without permission, so for now it would be less complicated to call Ballad them to them. His sweet sister had been feeling so lost, he could only help this fixed some of the wounds in her heart.

He ruffled Eris’s coat, tapped out a smile on her paw, and straightened his posture, tipping back his head as he called to his sister. There was urgency in his tone, but no danger, so she would know he was not in trouble.

The miserable child lay curled in her den. The explenation for her condition hadnt been unexpected but Rhythm's version didnt sit right with her. After the diagnosis she had decided to stay in her cool den the rest of the summer but jer brother had other plans. Ballad huffed heavily as Lament's call reached her ember marked ears. Reluctantly she pushed herself to her paws and slipped out of her den. Her ears remained pressed to her skull and her tail curled to her belly as she followed the trail.

Lament would likely be concerned with her depressed stature, but Ballad had no care in making up appearances. With her features blank silver eyes eventually came to rest on her brother and another slip of a she wolf. The markings were familiar, but Ballad couldn't grasp at her heritage.

She approached cautiously, fire kissed ears perking forward curiously. Uncertainty she signed as she said his name. "Lament?" who was this? Did she have some of their answers?

Eris Pyre

Lament's familiarity managed to ease her heart-pain a little bit, but it was just a bandage on an open wound. It would need stitches, staples - something stronger. Although the feeling of him ruffling her coat was a balm on her weary soul, it didn't make up for the long, terrifying nights she had spent alone since they'd left their homeland - and her - behind. Tracking them as far as she had was one of the great trials of her life. Not since she'd been left outside of her family den to wither and die had she felt so helpless and alone.

And still, she had persevered. She had made it. Eris tried to muster some confidence and signed her own smile in response to his. All they could do was wait for Ballad to arrive.

As their sister approached cautiously, Eris stayed close to Lament. Maybe if she could prove her familiarity with their brother, it would set Ballad at ease. The small she-wolf flicked her ears back and forth, unsure where to begin. "Ballad," she finally began, her voice cracking. "I finally found you, sister." If only there was a way to shock the both of them back to reality. What had wreaked such havoc on their brains? And where was their tutor? "How are you faring?" Eris added. Although she was unable to see the other female's body language, the emotion that quavered in their brother's name was enough to let her know that Ballad was a little worse for wear.

"Oh, Tor help us, we have to untangle this mess... what do you remember? Even if it's just pieces - colors, smells, sounds. You would be surprised what clues just those simple things might give!" If anyone could piece together a puzzle that didn't have any real pieces, it would be Eris.

When Ballad appeared, it would be obvious to all that she was handling their forced exile badly. She missed a home and family she did not know, traditions her body yearned for that she couldn’t understand. She was going through something, on top of all this, that Rhythm knew and he did not. He let her keep her secrets, he would not pry them from his close lipped, miserable sister. He could only be there for her, and hope that finding their lost sister would help her.

Eris leaned into him, and he supported her weight easily. She was a tiny wee thing, and he rested his muzzle on her head in a familiar way as he looked to Ballad. Eris spoke first, speaking their sisters name, and asking after them. She spoke of ‘Tor’ and Lament’s ears perked in curiosity at the familiarity to it. His paw tapped against Eris once more, making the motions of his emotions in a way that she could understand. gentle, gentle, fond smile he whispered to her, before kissing her ear, ruffling her coat, and stepping away.

The Ademre wolves were accustomed to close contact, to smaller personal space and being in each others comfort zones. He moved forward to nuzzle Ballad in greeting, before turning his head back to their other sister. “This is our sister Eris, and she has some of the answers we’ve been looking for.” he explained gently.

Ballad, the girl felt a little surprised, and started slightly as the black and white girl started. Silver eyes wouldn’t leave the small girl as she pressed against her brother in the same familiar way that Ballad might have. Was this their sibling? Lament had mentioned the name Amaretto.. ”how are you faring?” Ballad could honestly say that she was miserable, but she wasn’t about to confess so boldly. She was alive, she had lament, and the summer would eventually be over.

”I don’t know. I don’t know how I was before, but I hope it’s better than this.” She whispered as the girl continued. ”Oh, Tor help us…” Ballad felt herself perk at the name that had been invoked. It stirred something within her. She couldn’t think of any real memories that plagued her, but she did remember waking up at night.

Lament shifted to offer his sister comfort, explaining that this was their sister, Eris. She returned Lament’s affections as her paws signed nervously. ”hope, curious, fear.” What if she had been less happy before she lost her memory? What if the state she was in now was actually better?

”Who.. who is Tor?” The name felt powerful on her lips, and she felt as though she was on the cusp of something important. ”Why do I look at the sun, and the moon, at the same time every day, multiple times a day?” Her questions came out easy, even if she was nervous about being around the small girl.

Eris Pyre

Eris wagged her tail ruefully when Ballad said she had some of their answers. She wasn't sure how helpful she could be, but she was determined to try. They warmed to 'Tor' but the name didn't seem to register. Eris choked a bit - did their memory loss go that deep? Did they forget what was most important to their people? Not remembering Tor... it would be easier to forget her own name. "Oh... Oh no..." She murmured, leaning into Lament's kisses before trotting closer to the direction of Ballad's voice. Eris walked towards her sister's voice until she was nose-to-chest with the other female. "Oh, sister, I am so sorry."

"You look to the sun and moon to ground yourself and restore the balance of the world around you. Tor and Fenris are our deities, the great moon and sun. To not remember them would be my life's greatest loss... apart from losing you again." Eris stopped and took a breath, trying to steel herself to retell the story of their people. She felt woefully unequipped. "Why don't you settle down? Come, lie with me like we used to, and I will tell you all about us - the Ademre." With quick, nervous circles, Eris settled down into a small, tight ball at Ballad's paws. If they shared their warmth and she shared their stories, perhaps something would waken. She waited a moment for her siblings to gather close and then began in a soft, shaking voice. "In the beginning, Tor and Fenris were the makers of the sky above and the stone below..."

To punctuate her story, Eris occasionally tapped her paws upon her siblings, saying things like awe, happiness, longing. Together, they would remake the memories they had lost. Even if Eris had to spin them from dust, she would dutifully recreate them. No sacrifice was too great for her family.

Lament Pyre

The small family pressed together, three dark coats in a rough circle. Their paws occasionally tapped as they spoke their emotions to the each other. Ballad was hopefully, and fearful and he knew he was afraid for what they might discover. Lament couldn’t live in ignorance, and had been searching from day one to understand the disjointed pieces that occasionally strayed through his mind. The tree in his dreams called to him.

Ballad would speak to their sister about her habits, ones her body had formed that her mind no longer remembered. Lament did not have this same muscle memory. To him, his body spoke of the motions of war, and little else. Perhaps this was a female thing they did, but the thought did not resonate with him, and he did not believe it. So why did they do what they did, and not he?

Eris pressed into their sister, her voice spoke of worry, and she would begin to speak about a religion their people knew. He sat quietly, and listened politely, as was the way of his people. Eris would seat herself before them, prepared to tell them the stories of their people. He gratefully desired to hear them, and gave her a gentle tap support his paw murmured as he lay down beside Ballad, across from Eris, where his paws could still touch hers, but he could look at her as she told her stories.

The stories of religion did not resonate with him, and he felt this wasn’t a missing link to his life, but he could feel Ballad’s attention beside him. Could understand how Eris’s words spoke of of the rituals Ballad desired to make. He might not understand them, but he could respect their importance to his sisters, and he would look on in rapt attention.

Ballad watched as the black white marked girl closed the distance between them. The fanged she wolf breathed in Eris’ scent and tried to open her mind. She wanted to remember, she didn’t want to feel lost anymore. She craved deeply her lost knowledge and memories. ”Oh, sister, I am so sorry." Ballad felt herself leaning into the other girl’s touch, finding easy comfort there. Ember marked ears perked towards the woman’s words. She kept her memories, she was the key to unlocking what was lost to them. ”Come, lie with me…”

Ballad didn’t hesitate to take her up on her offer, she settled in with her brother and what she was slowly accepting as not a stranger. She was their sister. Ballad settled closer to Lament, her head rested on his hip as her fiery gaze could not be moved from Eris. This was what she had been missing for so long.

She stifled a few soft whines as Eris began, the emotions of finally realizing what she had been missing. What was still reluctant to return. Now she had a start though, she had the legends, she had their creation. Tor had been reunited through Eris. Ballad sighed, finally feeling a peace that had been so cruelly denied her.

Eris Pyre

With her family surrounding her, Eris felt something finally slide into place. This was good and right. This was where she belonged, piled between her siblings, warmth and familiar smells all around. Part of her wished this moment would never end. Surrounded on all sides, nothing could hurt her - nothing could hurt them. It was a balm on her aching spirit. "I can feel you relax," Eris whispered to Ballad, gently nuzzling whatever was nearest to her. Slowly, the other female's body language was changing. An inner tension was releasing. Eris was elated to have provided this comfort - it was so often that they had come to her rescue, and now she was able to return the favor.

"Your story, brother, is... Well, I am not as familiar with it," she confessed. It had been a long time since Eris had been part of Ademre sparring, although some of her earliest and fondest memories were wrestling with Ballad and Lament before they had grown too large to be careful with her. She recited what she could from her memory. "When we were very little, I was trained alongside you. We all had such fun! It wasn't so serious then, and I could..." I could see. "I could keep up with you," she evaded. "But I can tell you what I know of the Lethani! The code that guides us," Eris hurried onward, relaying what she could remember of their shared moral compass. Love, affection, unity she signed to them quickly, reiterating without words how thrilled she was to be reunited. "And of course, the Sword Tree. By the time I began to follow you, it was... well, a bit harder to make out, but I have the clearest memories of its far-reaching branches and bright, fiery red blooms. Beneath it are stones laid in order for the greatest warriors of our people to overcome - to gain a stone, you must defeat the one who holds it." She looked hopefully to Lament, wondering if it might help him at all. Although all of her siblings were close to her heart, she was most eager for his approval.

Lament Pyre

The Lethani there was a name that resonated within him, and it was more the social politeness and curiosity that kept him interested. He looked to Eris with a greater intensity. A quote spoke up from his memories, sparked by the reminder of what she had already given him. ‘There is no pretending to understand the Lethani. It is like swimming. It is obvious to anyone watching if you really know the way of it.’ did he know the way of it? He felt he could remember the edges, taste its importance. How it had been drilled into him as a child to follow the Lethani. His memories weren’t returned, not by a long shot, but he was losing the feeling of being lost.

She spoke of the warrior ranking of their people, she spoke of the sword tree. the sword tree that was the beautiful red creation that haunted his dreams. It was a great part of their landscape, and even his lost memory had teased at the edges of it. Overcome, he leaned forward and licked his younger sister over the ear. “Thank you, Little Whisper” he murmured to her gently, using a nickname he vaguely remembered with fondness.

“I don’t know why we lost our memories, but we needed this. We desperately needed this. Of all the wolves in our lives, you came and found us. I can not thank you enough, for how you have saved us.” he said to her, tapping strong love on her paw. Ballad might have returned to his memories more quickly, but he could not doubt his love for this third sister before them.

Eris was a soothing balm as Ballad relaxed against her and leaned into the gentle nuzzles they shared. Lament offered them as well and for the first time since she could remember she felt complete. In reality there were still many memories still missing to her, but she could feel the tendrils of them reaching out to her. The young Pyre girl closed her bright fire eyes and tried to remember. She cried out to Tor internally, begging to be given herself back.

She sat quietly and prayed silently as Eris went on to explain their culture further. Every word seemed to resonate like a gong, and with every ripple Ballad could feel her head clearing. Her memories would not return today, but the path for them was becoming clear.

She still felt incomplete, but the pieces were beginning to fall into place. ”Thank you, Eris.” She whispered to her sister as she reached over to nuzzle the black and white girl’s jaw lovingly. ”Thank, Tor you’ve been brought back to us.” Though the goddess was still mostly mystery, Ballad felt it soothing to invoke her name.

Eris Pyre

Eris chuffed quietly, so thrilled to hear Lament use her childhood nickname. It was something that she had sorely missed, almost as much as she had missed their physical presence. Saved them, she'd saved them. Eris felt stronger than she had before; she let those words grow stronger and buoy her up. Saved. It was the least she could do for all they had done for her. "Now that I've found you... what's the next step?" She whispered. "Where are you staying? If you are staying anywhere..." The thought of the two of them out in the cold, alone, made her near sick.

"Once you're feeling a bit more yourselves, we should set out for Amaretto. Between the three of us, I am absolutely sure we'll find her," Eris said confidently, nuzzling up against her siblings. Their love was a powerful thing, almost like magic. Although there wasn't any mention of "magic" in the Ademre lore, Eris thought that this was closest thing. They were stronger together.
