A Spark At Night

He felt refreshed. A very short nap, and some food later, and he was bright eyed and curious about everything that was going on. From fishing to racing (he missed the race, much to his disappointment), to one of the final events: firefly catching. He was particularly interested in this – it seemed fun! He could snap them up in his jaws, and then spit them out into the bag he was given. He couldn’t think of any other way to do it, but so long as he didn’t actually… BITE the firefly, it should be okay, right? Hopefully it didn’t try to fly down his throat though. That would be weird. And unpleasant.
Trotting around, he eyed all the other groups trying to catch fireflies. More and more were appearing every minute… including in front of his nose. Startled, he snapped at it, jaws hopefully snapping closed over the creature. Eyes wide, he turned and pawed open his bag, and leaned down to spit into the bag. Hopefully it was still alive and caught.

As Theta moved away from her previous catching spot she spotted another wolf that seemed to be alone. Even though she was only here to catch her last batch of fireflies she figured she might as well socialize with him. Who knew, maybe he would turn out to be decent.
As Theta approached the male she realized she had to think of something to start conversation, man polite socializing was hard. “How’s the catching gone?” Her opening statement said Theta moved to catch her final group of fireflies. Moving to swipe some that were in the air and guide them towards her bag.

Aiden's ears pricked as a voice registered to him, and he looked down to see a pup near him. He could tell she was still young; she had that lanky look about her, and clearly wasn't done filling out. "Hi," he greeted cheerfully. "It's... alright. I'm not the best at it," he confessed quietly. "It's harder than I thought. They like to dodge and then even when I'm just trying to catch them in my mouth, I feel like I keep accidentally killing them anyway." With a pause, he turned around and snapped at another group, trying to carefully close his jaws around them as Theta swatted at hers. Eyes widening, he looked down at his own paws before he spat the fireflies into the bag. Maybe he could try the paw thing. It might be easier. He just assumed they'd fly away like horse flies did, but they just kinda let themselves get pushed.
"How's it going for you?" he asked, though he had a feeling he knew the answer, considering what he just saw.

It had become clear to Theta in the few words that the male had spoken that he wasn’t the kind of wolf she would like. She also smelled the scent of Abaven on him which further confirmed her doubts. Nice wolves just weren’t gonna make it with her. She full well knew she wasn’t nice and any wolves that came off as kind just rubbed her the wrong way.
After all the effort she put into starting a conversation Theta wasn’t sure she just wanted to up and leave. If she left that meant a higher chance of running into more of her family as well. So despite her urges to leave Theta stayed and continued the inevitably boring conversation “I’m already done, haven’t bothered to count them all yet.”

He spat the fireflies into the bag with a small 'harrumph!' of triumph, nosing it to make sure it glowed weakly, and glowed it did. Perfect. He caught some; well okay, he caught one. But one was better than none, right, especially for this contest? He smiled as Theta responded; he figured she had already been done. "Did you already go to the prize booth?" he asked curiously. He hadn't gone by yet, but he was certainly curious about it. The festival wasn't quite over but maybe those who completed all activities were able to go and cash in
prizes already.
Eyeing the sky, he waited for the telltail lights of the bugs, grinning as he spotted a rather decent chunk. it was time to try the method he saw from Theta, and he scooted closer to the small swarm. With some concentration, he tried to herd the fireflies into the bag, before once more glancing at Theta. "If you're done already, you must have been one of the best, huh?" he wasn't sure if that was actually true or not, but she was a pup, and it was barely nighttime and she was saying she was done - so a logical assumption, yea?

Theta was tired of this interaction already, it was clear that he didn’t have the best grip on reality. Her ego wasn’t really stroked by his compliment either. She was ready to leave this conversation, but she had to find a way out first. Straight up leaving would be rude and while normally she was all for that it felt odd to do it at a festival. “I haven’t gone there yet. There’s definitely people better at this than I am.” Looking around for inspiration she said “I should probably go get my tickets, there might be a line.” Not the smoothest of exits but at least she was out.
