At The Scene Of A Grizzly Murder

Mæva stood in the forest listening to the cajoling of crows not far off from where she stood. Snow covered the ground and the sun remained hidden behind a cloudy gray sky. Crows were carrion birds and if she had to guess the multitude of calls meant that there was a kill near by or, if she was lucky, an unattended carcass.
Racing along the forest floor she grinned as she saw crows covering an elk carcass and there were no other predators in sight. Excellent! She moved in, chasing off the crows from the hind end of the animal. Seizing one of the thighs she started to work on detaching it in case she needed to make a quick get away. Uh oh… She stopped what she was doing and looked around her as she heard something big moving in the forest. As luck would have it a large grizzly bear was moving toward her. She eyed the bear. Weren't they supposed to be hibernating?
It came closer and she realized there was something wrong with it. It smelt strange for one thing and was drooling heavily for another. She'd heard of moose getting brain parasites and winding up farther south than they should. Was something up with this bear? The bear seized the elk's throat and started dragging it, unperturbed by the young wolf's presence. "No!" She grabbed hold of the leg but it could barely be called a tug of war as she was being dragged along with the carcass. Dropping her hold she dove at the bear and bit it sharply on the ass.

There weren't many plans in the pale wolf's mind, aimlessly wandering the lands as she sought something, anything out. Life hadn't been as entertaining as she had wanted it to be, and the female was growing bored. Days seemed to melt into one as she went out searching for some fun. It could be anything at this point, although she had a few clear favorites. A heavy sigh left her lips as she roamed into the dark forest, pulling herself out of her mind to glance at the blue like haze that seemed to filter across the landscape. It would be a bit spooky to just anyone, but Mercy welcomed the chill that settled across her spine. It rose her hackles, a creeping smile splitting apart her inky lips. It was a start, that was for sure. She had a feeling that this forest held more than it dared to say, the dense fog wrapping around her ankles. If she could purr, she would right now, settling as she started to feel more like herself.
Ears pulled forward as she heard a chorus of crows call before taking to the sky. Purple eyes cast just below where they had taken off from, her nostrils flaring as she turned in that direction. Usually a flock of that size was generally scared off of something, and she wanted to know what by. Running her tongue over her lips, she crashed through the underbrush without much care to silence her steps. Besides, it was a tad bit hard for the dire wolf sized girl to move with much grace, large paws slapping the ground with force. Pushing her way into a small clearing, a very interested scene started to unfold before her. A young pup tore at one end of a long dead elk, a crazed looking bear at the other end. Mercy watched with a single raised black brow, eyeing the bold pup that dropped her snack and ran to bite at the bear instead. She heard the creature roar, enough to make her own gaze fly wide open. My my, what a daring little child this was. She could just stand here and watch the little thing get squished by the massive grizzly, but that didn't sound very fun. Ever since she herself was that little, she had had a small obsession with taking on big bears. It made her feel like a bad ass, what could she say? Plus, this one didn't look quite right, the scent of it seemed more death like than the clearly dead elk. Shrugging her shoulders, Mercy jumped in to join the fray.
Moving to the same side as the child, the scarred wolf charged up and bit the bear on the shoulder as it moved to pluck the pup from its hind end. She could taste blood welling into her mouth as she sliced into its skin. Instead of the usual enjoyment that followed the taste, Mercy let go with a small wretch, spitting the blood from her maw. It wasn't right, something was very wrong with this bear... She hadn't much time before a large paw came for her, leaving her little time to drop her body onto the forest floor below, just missing the massive claws that were aimed for her side. "Quite a bold move, taking on this thing," she called towards the girl, picking herself up with a shake, eyes trained on the massive beast. Its moves were crazed and erratic, harder to place than any other large predator. This would be fun...

The bear roared and turned around to swipe at her but by then she was off at the other end of the carcass. The bear charged and she danced out of the way, circling the bear and snapping at it, trying to annoy the creature enough that it would leave her alone but the bear wasn't going anywhere. He stood up and roared before swiping at her again. Mæva huffed and charged seizing hold of it's hind end again. Suddenly a white wolf came flying out of nowhere, biting into the bear just as it turned to get her.
Mæva let go and skittered back, followed shortly by the woman. "I was hoping if I annoyed it enough it would just go away." She didn't get a chance to say much more as the bear snarled and charged after the woman. Mæva dove to the side then shot like a rocket toward the kill, immediately she started working through the thigh where she'd been eating earlier. If she could just get it detached she could take off with it.

As she dropped to the ground, she could see the younger girl go back towards the elk, leaving her to dodge the bear herself. A growl erupted from the woman as she twisted to bite at the bear's face, flinching as it slapped her upside the head as it reared upwards. "You know, kid, that would usually work but -" she started, cutting off to dive out of the way as the beast crashed back down to the ground. "I think there is a little something off with this one, it's going to need more convincing!" Just as she finished speaking, the bear shoved her to the side and dove back for the elk, foam spraying from its maw.
Mercy hit the earth with a solid thud, cursing under her breath as she quickly pushed herself back up, ignoring the bruising on her left side. She instead pushed onward, leaping onto the bears flank to bite into its scruff. That sour taste of the blood made her stomach turn, but she pushed past it and tossed her head to and fro, hoping the pain would be enough to distract it for now. Mercy had no idea what was up with this bear, or this kid, but she wasn't about to stand here and watch her get torn to shreds for no reason. Generally she wasn't the type to go out of her way to do anything kind, but she was getting a good fight out of this, after all. That was, if the strange girl would stop focusing on the damn elk so much and get back to helping her. That little brat better not make off with the food and leave her here to fight off this crazed bear by herself.

Mæva severed the elk thigh. If she could get a piece of it stashed away they wouldn't need to defend the kill and could leave the rest to the bear. Picking it up in her jaws she started to take off running but was promptly intercepted by the bear. She dropped the thigh and as the bear dove toward her she darted beneath its front legs then underneath its left side. Her jaws flew open as she bit hard on the bear's left hind leg. She thrashed her head and took off again as it twisted around to get her. "Ok, you're right! So, what do we do?"
She dove out of the way, spying the older woman holding onto the bear's scruff. Mæva backed up against a tree, then grinned. She held still as the bear dove again for her. Mæva leapt out of the way just as the bear neared. It wasn't able to stop in time and slammed brutally into the tree.
