a curiosity

Tyrian eyed the cock-eyed tree before him. He nodded to himself decidedly and then took several steps back. With an effortful grunt - he was getting quite heavy - he launched himself up onto the bent trunk. His forepaws hit the wood first and instinctively his paws flexed to dig in his claws, but the grip was only a mild aid as his momentum carried him up the tree. Tyrian's hind paws hit next. This time when his claws dug in they did so with a purpose. Once his grip was solid, Tyrian's coiled legs straightened, launching him further up the tree. The actions were repeated twice more as he climbed the trunk and moved from the crook of one limb to another. In seconds he was a solid 15 feet in the air; not bad for a canine.
He paused to rest against a branch; his forelegs braced down the back of the trunk and the branch while his hind legs hung down the opposing side with their claws dug into the bark. Hanging over his head - and still out of reach - was the item that had piqued his curiosity. It appeared to be a large piece of fabric onto which cords of some sort hung. The fabric was what had gotten tangled in the tree's branches, but below it, at the other end of the cords, was what looked like some sort of small harness. Tyrian had never seen anything like it.
The fabric contraption was hanging far enough away that Tyrian wasn't quite sure he could reach it. He was going to have to think about it for a second, see if a game plan threw itself together, before he made his next move. With his momentum gone he would have to climb for it - really climb this time - and the branches were now small enough to concern him. He was a bit heavy for this. Still, he was determined. Given enough time he'd come up with a plan and he wouldn't come down until he had that thing in his grasp.

The land was very diverse. He'd seen deserts, tropical islands with man-made structures, frozen waterfalls, and more. The man would have gone more east, but he was actually starting to miss the natural warmth of the west, and it was sometimes tedious making fires so much. Especially when not all of the resources were nearby. He either ended up with a weak fire, or had to go on with no fire at all.
Where he was now, it was mostly bleak with few colors, but there were a lot of shrubs and trees around. It made him wonder, as he wandered the area, what kind of trees they were, and what they will look like in the spring. The days weren't as cold as usual, the worse of the weather beginning to wear off. While still far from winter, at least the climax was beginning to be over.
His thoughts are interrupted by the loud rustling and creaking of branches. The noise originates above him, causing the wolf to look up and find--why, what on earth was that wolf doing up there?! “Are you all right up there?!” he called, a good sniff giving him detail that it was a male. It was hard to tell from this distance if he was a teen or adult, but he certainly was not a pup. “How did you get up there?”

After hefting himself up into the crook of the tree, Tyrian gathered his paws under him and attempted to stand up on his back legs while using his front paws to "climb" the trunk of the tree. Once he was fully stretched out and more or less balanced, he dug in the claws of one forepaw into the tree bark while reaching over his head with the other. He swatted gently at the dangling harness but managed to do little more than brush the lowest strap with the tips of his claws. If he could only stretch out a little bit more he could snag it. His claws were freshly sharpened so it wouldn't take much force to sink them into the strap. The gentle swatting motion was almost enough to unbalance him and Tyrian ended up having to drop back down into the crook to avoid falling out of the tree entirely.
He was on the verge of trying again when a voice from below gave him pause. Tyrian crouched down further and peeked through the lower branches so he could see who was talking to him. The speaker was a male, smaller than Tyrian, and had the sort of friendly, open face that lead Tyrian to suspect he was dealing with a decent guy. Tyrian grinned down at him then replied, "Yeah I'm golden. Just a man on a mission. See that thing up there?" He held the branches aside so the stranger could see the parachute. "I want it. So I climbed."
