Blossoms on the Tide

Maggot had roamed the territory, stepping out of her comfort zone to investigate the various plants. The girl took interest in a small blossom of white flowers.
The flowers were small and fanned out from its green base. The girl plopped down next to it, debating on if she should test some of the plant.
She shrugged and took a tender nibble. It was a bit stiff and the taste was bitter. She wrinkled her nose in slight disgust, spitting out the offensive taste.
The girl gingerly collected a bundle of the strange herb, and decided she would seek out a healer or older pack mate for information. The girl was determined to start her healing career quickly.

"Hello there." Iolaire had come upon the young wolf while out foraging for the first greenery of spring. "Mags, isn't it?" Sirius had told her of the girl, her name and somewhat of her background. The small, dark healer refused to call the girl by her full name. It was insulting and she wouldn't be a part of it.
Io noted the herbs the the young woman had collected. "Ahhh, Boneset. Nasty tasting stuff, but useful." She didn't know how extensive Mags knowledge of healing was, but she had been told that the girl was interested in learning more. "Do you know about it?" In her excitement at finding the earless fae inspecting herbs, she'd completely forgotten to introduce herself. "I'm Iolaire, by the way. Lead healer of the Armada and the much younger, cooler sister to Sirius." The woman grinned, one silver brow arched in mirth.

Maggot had spotted Iolaire, so the girl stilled as the healer approached. As Iolaire began to speak, the girl gently set the flowers on the ground. She nodded softly to confirm that was indeed her name. Maggot noted that the members of the pack seemed to be more keen to calling her “Mags”, which was fine by the girls standards.
Her gaze shot up to Iolaire as the woman began speaking about Bonest. What a strange name that was. The girl peered up at her with peaked interest, her tail waggling slightly behind her.
The girl chuckled softly at Iolaire’s statement that she was the cooler sibling. She must be the coolest wolf alive, then. She thought, a soft smile on her maw.
“Oh, no, I had no idea what it was. I was hoping to find someone to ask, and it seems you are the wolf to speak to,” she replied eagerly, her shy demeanor forgotten as her interest was peaked.

Io instantly took a liking to the girl. Though she was shy and a bit demure, she could tell that the girl was good natured and kind. "Come," she instructed, picking up the herbs and taking them onto one of the stone platforms where the warriors battled. It would get them off of the sand. Io hated getting sand in her coat.
Placing the Boneset back down, Io patted the stone, asking Mags to sit. "So Boneset," she began, small skull tilting slightly as she spoke, "is used to combat fever and illness. Too much though and you can become very ill. It could even bring about death." A light shrug was given. "The same could be said of many, many herbs though, so don't let it scare you." Most plants, if eaten in excess, could kill a wolf. Good thing that they didn't eat plants often, eh?
"So you want to be a healer, eh?" The woman's green rimmed yellow eyes sparkled with amusement. "A pack of warriors is always in need of healers. These big lugs get injured more than you could possibly imagine." Her brother, her mother and her husband included.

Maggot stumbled after the healer with interest, her iris-colored eyes honed on Iolaire. She sat down silently across from the wolf, eyeing the Boneset as Iolaire explained its use.
“That’s interesting, I didn’t think plants did much. Some do taste sweet though,” the girl replied excitedly.
She nodded slowly as Iolaire spoke, a shocked expression forming on her face.
“Well that means I just have to know all the dangerous ones so I don’t die,” she replied calmly.
At Iolaire’s question, the girl nodded adamantly, a smile on her maw.

Io laughed aloud at Mag's assessment of the short lesson. "Aye. You'll have to learn which ones can kill you. Also very useful knowledge to have." Io specialized in poisons. They were quite exciting things. It was very empowering to know that you could kill someone without them knowing until it was too late. "There are many plants that can be used to bring death, but also can be used to heal, oddly enough."
"Well, if you aim to be a healer, I suppose we'll be spending a great deal of time together. Not only am I the lead healer, but I also teach." Io had many students under her belt. Her most apt pupil was Indigo, her nephew. "If you have a hungry mind, I'll definitely feed it."

The girl listened intently, bobbing her head periodically to show she was listening. The girl was impressed, to say the least. Iolaire was young, and she seemed incredibly intelligent.
"Yes, I want to learn as much as you," she replied hurriedly, her tail flopping sporadically beside her.
The girl peered down at the Boneset she had grabbed earlier and it excited her there was so much more to learn. She also felt relieved that she could learn a way to protect herself without violence. She could make someone sick, or just straight up kill them. The girl furrowed her brow at the latter.
"I like that I can help people but also protect the people I care about," she spoke up quietly. However, whatever moment she was having was interrupted by a thought.
"I know that Crocus is dangerous. I only know that since they're the color of my eyes and I tried to show my siblings, but I got yelled at," she added, eyes peering up at Iolaire, "Do you have those here?" Maggot wanted to show Iolaire she knew at least something about plants.

Io was interested to hear that the girl knew of Crocus. "Yes, we have Crocus. It's the season for it as well." Rising from her place, Iolaire motioned for Mags to follow her. She dropped down off of the stone slab and moved to the edge of the plain where it met the grassy, forested area. After nosing about for a shirt while, Io released a small exclamation. "Here we are." Rather than pluck the purple flowers, she left them where they grew. She had her own stash growing in the poison garden, after all.
"Crocus are one of the first flowers to bloom in the spring. They do well in colder climates because of this." Leaning down, she gave the blooms a little inhale, enjoying the scent of growing things after such a long, cold winter with no plants. "Crocus are dangerous, you know?" Lifting a silver brow, she opened the floor to allow Mags to tell her what she knew of Crocus.

The girl followed behind Iolaire quickly, stumbling a bit as she moved off of the slab. Mags watched as the woman sniffed around in the snow, her brows knitting in confusion. The girl chuffed a little as her paws hit the thin sheet of snow, a shiver being sent down her spine at the feeling. Mags felt as though the winter had been a bit too long. She moved closer when the familiar flower was dug from the snow.
Her gaze flicked to Iolaire as she listened intently to what the woman said. Maggot was a bit surprised that the flowers bloomed in such weather, as she had assumed most flowers needed lots of sunlight and warmth. The girl's eyes once again shifted to peer at the small flower, her head tilting as Iolaire asked her if she knew the danger of Crocus.
"They're poisonous to us, aren't they?" she questioned quickly. Her eyes peered up at Iolaire for confirmation, an eager spark in her indigo colored eyes.

When the girl asked for confirmation on crocus being poisonous, Iolaire gave a nod. "They are. Ingesting them can bring about severe stomach issues. Eating too many can bring about death." Gently and almost lovingly, Iolaire brushed her bluish pawpads over the purple petals. She had such an affinity for poisonous things. She wondered if Mags might develop the same.
Turning her attention towards the girl, Iolaire questioned her. "Do you have an area that you're more interested in than others or would you like to be well rounded in the healing arts?" They could focus on wound care and general health related knowledge. They could also focus on general herbology; the use of each plant around them. If Mags was interested, Iolaire could teach her all about poisons. It had been a long time since she'd had a student that craved that sort of knowledge.
