The hunt had begun easily enough. Aslatiel had tracked the hare in the Gully, using every trick in her arsenal of silent sneaking to get as close as possible. She'd tamped down her breathing, slowing her heart rate. Paws were expertly placed and splayed just right so that she might walk silently through the underbrush. The scent of the rich, fat hare had instantly caught her attention and was so very easy to follow. Game tended to use trails and it was a simple thing to see where the grass had been bent to either side in a path that was obviously well used. Being small, Aslatiel was able to utilize the path as well, though not as easily as a hare might.

Vibrant purple eyes scanned the still grasses ahead of her, searching for any sign of movement. The area seemed unnaturally still today for some reason. It helped and hindered. It would be easy to see movement, but the lack of wind made it more difficult to catch scents and, aside from that, it just made things feel weird. The little killer didn't let it bother her too much, however. She was intent on killing, so killing she would do.

Grey ears perked at the rustle of grass. Excitement welled in her as she caught the motion of a long, brown ear tipped in black. Finally, her quarry was in sight. She willed her heart to slow once more as she slowly and painstakingly edged her way forward through the grass. With each step, the smell of the hare became richer and consumed her olfactory senses. She couldn't wait to feast.

Asla was practically giddy as she came within pouncing range and had to remind herself not to get overly excited. Focus. Focus. Focus. That was what she needed. The cream and grey girl planted her hind claws in the earth. Her galaxy gaze never left the twitching nose and tall ears. Muscles bunched in her hindquarters, preparing for the attack. She took a deep breath and...

From up above, a crow cawed a loud warning, startling both the young wolf and the hare. It made a break for it and still she leaped. Rather than landing where she had intended, Aslatiel landed just behind the fleeing hare. In a last ditch effort, she swiped a paw outward and sharp claws found purchase, slicing into the side of her quarry. It didn't stop the hare though. The creature ran as though its life depended on it, which it did. Asla collected herself from the grass, glared up at the cackling crow above, and set out after her lunch.

There was blood on her claws, so she knew that she'd struck gold. Now all that she had to do was find the hare. It was wounded and left spatterings of blood here and there. Tracking it would be a cinch, right?

What Aslatiel hadn't expected was for the hare to have the endurance to travel to a different land. She assumed that it would bleed out and die in the Gully. When she followed the trail out to the edge of the hills, the girl frowned. Hares were stronger than she thought.

Having never been to this part of the land before, Aslatiel was a little apprehensive. The landscape was so different from what she was used to. Rather than being covered in trees and greenery, it was a vast expanse of dirt, rocky nothingness. It was strange and made her feel off balance and out of place. Gingerly, the girl picked her way between the mounds of risen rock, eyes on the lookout for danger and the hare that she was intent on eating.

The drops of blood were becoming more and more scarce and eventually they stopped entirely. She was back to using the power of her nose to suss out the hares location. No longer was she worried about sneaking up on it. The thing had to be either weak from all of the blood loss or dead. Killing it would be a simple thing if it was still alive. If it wasn't it would be easier still, wouldn't it?

As she picked her way along, she noticed circling vultures up in the sky. Two, then a third joined. Aha... It was bird that had started this chase and it would be birds that would end it. The girl's legs pumped a little faster as she made her way to the birdy beacon. There, just where she hoped it would be, lay the hare. Its breathing was shallow and it was on the way out, but it was still clinging to life. One quick bite to the throat ended the struggle for breath and her hunt was over.

Aslatiel lifted the hare from its final resting place and the vultures, dismayed by their misfortune, dispersed. Proud of her accomplishment, the striped youngling almost pranced as she began to make her way back to more hospitable lands. As she moved, the ground beneath her began to gently rumble. Then shake. Purple eyes went wide in fear. What was this? Was the earth rising to swallow her up? Claws bit into the earth as Aslatiel ran. As fast as her little legs would carry her, she ran, only stopping when she was away from that horrid place and back in the comforting embrace of the green.
