Sneak, sneak, sneak, sneak… He was on the hunt! He’d been trailing Justice through the festival grounds after the signups at the fights. He was practicing for the hunting competitions, and he wanted to be perfect at tracking. What better way to practice than tracking the Sentinel?
His tail swirled a bonfire behind him as he went, and several times he had to duck behind a tent, peeking around the edge to watch until she turned around, scampering quietly after her like a furtive little fireball. The din of walking wolves and chatter and sales pitches and music would surely cover his trailing tracking routine.
He grinned, fully having fun, before he chose to launch his attack. His legs pumped, tail battling the air as he gave a yell, leaping to wrap his paws and forelegs around one of her stocky back legs and hang on for dear life.
Walk ---- "Speak" ---- "Labhair an Sean-Teanga." ---- "Hear" ---- Think |
Ardyn at first glance is as black as can be imagined with a raven sheen.
Closer inspection proves that he shimmers in fire tones in every hair on his hide right down to his lashes.
More obviously, he glows like a bed of coals and flames with every movement and brush of fur. His tail is usually wagging, so blazes like a torch.
His adult teeth are in and his saber canines have grown to their full length (see profile). His mane and tail hair have grown to full length, as well as being lightweight and easily buffeted by breezes.
A look at his front paws will give the impression of hands, with his dew claw dropped low and lengthened into a functioning thumb, and his toes elongated into fingers. He has retractable, solid black cat-like claws on every paw.
Ardyn has developed a glowing mast of intricate markings in fire and ice colors over his face, symmetrical over the last seasons of Year 17 (see profile for details). During hunts or raids/sieges, he will smudge them out with black soot to cover the glow, otherwise, they are bright enough to note at first direct glance at his face. Not all his artwork currently portrays the mask markings.
He is also often bedecked in beads, small bells, feathers in blues, ribbons and braids thanks to the Ooze Event of Halloween 2021, and the Coathanger item that he got. The accessories generally are seen most in his mane and tail hair. He removes the brighter items and bells for hunts or battle.
She was being followed.
After a few more twists and turns around the market stalls, she was sure of it. The feeling hadn't gone away, the nagging little bits that her senses were picking up right at the edges of her vision and ramrodding up her gut to give her the creepy crawlies. She made her way to a particular stall with polished metal "mirrors", glancing at one with her eyes only as she passed, and that confirmed it, but she nearly burst out laughing. All that and it was only one of Aurielle's pups sneaking around. The culprit might even have blended in despite the mirrors if he weren't... you know... glowing whenever he moved at all.
Knowing where the itchy crawly feeling came from eased it entirely, and she was able to continue on her patrol and ignore the boy. She still kept tabs on him, though, because if trouble came and she needed to deal with a problem she wanted to know where exactly he was at all times in relation to it. Still, when the attack came it came by surprise, for she had stopped to stare intently at what she'd thought might be an altercation but turned out to be a particularly exuberant greeting, and found herself lurching forward slightly as an unexpected weight slammed into one of her legs and leeched onto it. She lifted the leg and shook it back and forth rapidly to rattle the pup around. "Oh, no," she said in the driest tone possible, squinting at the shimmery pup as though she didn't know what it was. "I seem to have a leech."

He was thrilled. He’d caught Justice by surprise! He clung as she lifted her leg and shook, grinning at her from around her hock, mismatched eyes twinkling as he giggled. “I got you!”
Finally, he released her leg and pranced up to her with a friendly bump on her shoulder with a bounce of his front end before he asked, eyes wide, ears perked, “What’s a leech?”
Such bright curiosity, and he fairly quivered with the excitement of learning something new, tail ramping into a firefan behind him. What was a leech? It must be as big as he was if she thought she’d been caught by one. Was it a predator?
