"I'm still not sure about this." Ragna glanced to her husband as she hunted through the Weeping Woods looking for a reasonably straight, flexible branch to use for an atlatl dart. Skælingr had gotten the idea from his companion Sowelu who had crafted and used one before. Skælingr thought for sure there was a way for a wolf to use one but having seen his companion throw an atlatl she just couldn't picture the movement in her head. Still her husband was determined to make one so she figured she'd help.

Ragna approached a hazel bush and found a reasonably straight branch. She chewed on the base until she freed the brach. Settling down in a nice clearing she stated stripping the branch of offshoots and leaves.

"Hey now, we'll never know if we don't try." Skælingr was determined to at least give this a shot and if it turned out it didn't work then he could always give it to Sowelu so the lemur would be able to help out more on hunts. She scouted through the Weeping Woods. He was hopping to find a good piece of branch to make the atlatl but then he spied a nice white tail deer shed. I was a smaller rack, probably from a younger buck. He swiftly moved toward it and snatched up one of the antlers in his jaws before turning back to where his wife was settling down. He sat across from her with the antler shed between his paws and he set to work chewing off the tines that would be in the way. This was probably rough on his teeth but he wasn't sure of a better way to do this unless he wanted to try and work with a rock and he didn't really care to do that.

Once Ragna had the extra leaves and branches trimmed off the stick she needed to make a point. Taking the stick over to a sharp, fractured rock she started scraping one end of the stick to sharpen it. She used one of her paws to help aim the stick as she bent her head and scraped. When she had a good point she trotted over to the fire and stuck the point in to harden it. Turning the stick she watched it carefully. As soon as it turned back she pulled it out of the fire and walked back over to the sharp stick to continue scraping it to finalize the point. "There we go, I'm starting to get something done here." She kept working then paused for a moment. "Skæ, love, what do you think we should do for this winter. Should we consider joining a pack?"

The sound of teeth on bone echoed through the forest as Skælingr worked to shape the atlatl. He focused on chewing off the antler tines that were in the way. It was tough work on his teeth but he was determined. Once the tines were mostly chewed off he did try picking up one of his granite stones and bashing it against the antler. This worked for awhile but he soon went back to chewing o polish it up. He had to admit there was something nice about just chewing on antlers. It was hard work but he was slowly getting there. He paused for a moment at his wife's question and shrugged in reply. "There's no hurry. Summer has only just started and we still have time but, yes, I would like to join a pack by winter time."

Ragna nodded at her husband's reply. She didn't care to over winter in a strange land with just the two of them. With the stick and point done it was time to attach feathers to her atlatl dart. Ragna pulled out a few crow feathers. Taking one of the she set it down between her paws and taking a flint knife she carefully cut the feather in half before chewing off the excess point. She could use the knife to shape the feathers but she opted to leave them for now and see how they did. Now to attach them. Ragna took the pine pitch stick and started to heat the pitch over the fire. Once it started to melt she spread some on the back end of the stick, carefully positioning the stick with her paws so it didn't roll over and get a bunch of leaves and gunk stuck to it. She gingerly set the pitch stick down then picked up one of the feather halves and stuck it onto the stick, holding onto the feather until she was sure it was dry. Once one feather was done she worked to add two more so there were three positioned evenly to form dart fletching.

When at last he had a mostly smooth section of antler that was about straight he turned his attention to the one base of antler left. He was going to use this as a notch to hold the dart. Chewing on the base of the antler to shape it a bit more he hummed lightly to himself. Once that was done he started chewing in a little notch just to make it easier to keep the dart in place. Soon he had a finished atlatl. "I can't wait to show this to Sowelu. I think you're right I don't know quite how a wolf would use this without building on some sort of handle or additional lever that can be gripped with the mouth." He picked it up in his mouth and tested it for a moment before setting it down next to the darts.
