bunk buddies

A million things were running through his mind as he packed his things up into the jaguar pelt he'd gotten with Sirius that first time, rolling what few belongings he had into it. Shrugging his bear skin on, he barely gave even a final look to his now empty den before heading off in the direction of Mortis' new den. Surprised the boy just hadn't moved in on his own accord while he was away, he was sure the young man would enjoy having company in his new den rather than some new member he barely knew just yet. Besides, oh what fun they could have in their own den!
Arriving at Mortis' den, he poked his head inside in search of the boy before dropping the pelt with his few belongings. "Got yourself a new denmate!" He announced, whether the boy was inside or not didn't matter, his voice would travel a bit as it bounced off the walls of the den.

It was late, and Mortis had just finished fetching something for Siren to have for dinner. He brought it up to her smaller room set higher in the small cave-den. The small flight of steps up almost made him trip, before he arrived in the windowed space that was all her own. He didn’t enter the room, just placed the meat on the floor with a friendly wave of his tail. “I’ve almost got the waterfall working, Siren” he explained, he had been experimenting with having water tumble down the side of his cave. He just needed a way for the waterfall to replenish itself, or a way to suck the water back to the top… it was hard work, no doubt.
A voice down below caught his attention. “Oh, i’ll just see who that is” he said to Siren, before ducking back down the stairs, to be greeted with a surprising sight. “Uncle Mags!” he cried, and flew into the arms of one of his mentor-wolves. The man had missed, but Mortis had turned into a yearling well he was gone, and finished filling out the promise of his youth. He almost crushed Magnus beneath flailing limbs and wings.

Mortis was determined if nothing else, he was slowly delivering on his promises. She had her own little den that was safe away from the visitors that appeared more frequently than she was comfortable with. He also had a place especially for her when loneliness struck her heart and she just wanted to be close to someone. Maybe Mort still wasn't her favorite, but at the moment he was all she had.
It was hard not to think about Chimera. He had been all that she had to rely on for so long, surely he felt the same about her in some capacity. Their dad and brother disappeared so early in their lives. Their older siblings practically disowning them, their mother’s recent disappearance. Was he okay?
Her thoughts were pulled from him as Mort lay her some food at the door. He gave her all the space she wanted from him, and he didn’t push her too hard, not like the first day he’d taken her. The sound of another’s voice made her jump, but having Mort close helped soothe her as he went to greet the man boisterously. Siren recognized him vaguely as a man who had been in her mother’s palace for a time.

The scent of not just Mortis filled his nose as he had called out, but it meant little to him. It was of a young female he assumed, but would think it would just be that of a friend or possibly another roommate. Magnus didn't mind the company of others, really he was just excited to spend a little extra time with Mortis. He could hear talking inside the den before a blur of him approached, throwing himself at him. Magnus barely caught the grown child, huffing as he did so to joke about the boys massive size.
"I didn't think you could get any bigger!" He joked, knowing full well he would rival the size of his father. He released his arms from around Mortis a moment later and smiled up to the kid before catching a glance of the girl. "Who do we have here?" He smirked at Mortis, implying things as a joke but knowing better than that. The girl did seem somewhat familiar, but from the darkness inside the den he could hardly see her.

His tackle-hug hit Magnus full on, and the older wolf caught him in his paws and Mortis was able to bury himself in the other wolf's coat, his wings coming around to hug him too. He had lost Malalia, and Mags had been gone so long he had thought he had lost him, too. But here he was, back again! And Mort was so glad.
“You’ve shrunk!” he accused his mentor and friend, and then Magnus brought his attention back to Siren, and he pulled back slightly, giving the silvery wolf a frown-smile. Then leaning forward to whisper. “She’s… really shy, she’ll come down if she’s up for it” and left it at that. He wasn’t dragging poor Siren around any more than he had to. In fact, maybe Mags could offer him some advice in how to help Siren, but he wasn’t going to be talking about her like she wasn’t even here. Even if she was staying out of sight. “Wait… did you say bunk buddies?” his tail began a furious wiggle behind him. His den had been feeling so empty, and Siren had helped, but… Mags would be very welcome. ‘Oh, wait… Siren!” he called up. “You cool if Mags bunks in here? He won't enter your room or bother you without your say-so” he was sure Mags would be happy to agree to those terms.

Siren might have thought him vaguely familiar but she didn’t recognize him and it would have been better if she just disappeared into the shadows. He’d seen her, and he seemed to tease Mortis about it as well. The tiny girl looked away from both of them as Mortis leaned forward to whisper about her. She huffed lightly to herself resigned to going back to being invisible when her bright eyes widened in surprise as Mortis was suddenly turning his attention, and permission, over to her.
”What?” She whined, already uncomfortable enough being taken away from everything familiar to her. Now she was being asked to open herself up to another wolf, this one she barely knew. ”No. No no no no…” Tears stung at her eyes and she grit her teeth, why was she getting so upset over this? It was just another change to try and get used to. ”No.” She stood up, her long fur bristling, making her look much bigger than she actually was. ”I’m going back. I just want everything back to how it was. I’m going back.” Tears streamed down her face now, and though she declared exactly what she wanted, obedience was so ingrained that she couldn’t move from the entrance of her room no matter how much she wanted.

"I have not! You've grown!" He laughed, jabbing at Mortis a bit. "You have to be as big as your dad now!" He'd have to see them side by side to know that, but Mortis had certainly gotten taller. He was a growing boy, after all. He frowned at what he said next though, trying to catch a glance at the girl without getting seen. He was excited about bunking with the boy, but the simple thought of it was apparently stressing the young girl out as she started to seemingly have a panic attack about it. His frown deepened as she continued, expressing her distaste for even staying in the den anymore.
He glanced at Mortis, eyes widened and took a step back. He didn't want to stress this girl out any more than she already was and figured it would probably be best to just move back into his den. "Uhh, yeah but I don't want to cause any problems.." He said softly, his frown still present on his dark lips.

Mortis looked to Mags with an expression of panic on his own face as Siren began to stress. Mortis just… didn’t know what to do about her. The poor thing had been abused, and she seemed to lash out easily now. She was a far cry from the sweet thing that had taken piggy back rides on his back only a season ago. It hurt his heart to see her this way now.
Sadly, Mags didn’t seem to have a perfect answer for everything, and instead offered to leave. Mortis wrapped a wing gently around the man's shoulder, silently begging him to stay. “It’s okay Siren… I can put uh… a cover over your door for privacy, it’ll be nice, I promise?” he asked, through it came out more like a question, more anxiety entering his voice then he intended.
