Esther put one careful paw after the other, admiring the dark pools of bubbling liquid that dotted the desert while simultaneously making sure the boy stayed as far away as he could manage. As tired as he was, he could recognise it wouldn't do him much good to be consumed by the strange ooze, not yet at least.
But oh, how he looked like a corpse already. Maybe a dip in the gurgling void would do his poor pelt some good. His fur hung loose and ragged, filthy and dull, his shape gaunt and startling. Rabbit's blood smeared the pale child's face, and his amber eyes gleamed from their sunken sockets. He looked like a ghost, but it wasn't like he noticed. Or cared.
He'd spent so many seasons in complete isolation and yet the sun felt so alien on his back. Where was he?
