His mother worked through drill with him a last time before stepping back with a nod. It was an early morning, crisp and crunchy with frost, and she’d taken him to the Field to find a sparring partner. He’d picked the spot, and now Aurielle moved to an area out of the way as Ardyn tipped his muzzle to the sky and howled for a partner, tail torching the air with a thread of excitement as he looked around, waiting to see what would come.
Lyr clucked, landing on Ardyn’s back while they waited to see who would come to spar. The boy and Raven had been working on working together as a team, and they were getting pretty well coordinated, though they had a long way to go before they were seamless.
He’d hoped to be using his first armor today but he’d found an issue with the fit, so it sat at home, leaving him with his natural tools and weapons.

Ardyn at first glance is as black as can be imagined with a raven sheen.
Closer inspection proves that he shimmers in fire tones in every hair on his hide right down to his lashes.
More obviously, he glows like a bed of coals and flames with every movement and brush of fur. His tail is usually wagging, so blazes like a torch.
His adult teeth are in and his saber canines have grown to their full length (see profile). His mane and tail hair have grown to full length, as well as being lightweight and easily buffeted by breezes.
A look at his front paws will give the impression of hands, with his dew claw dropped low and lengthened into a functioning thumb, and his toes elongated into fingers. He has retractable, solid black cat-like claws on every paw.
Ardyn has developed a glowing mast of intricate markings in fire and ice colors over his face, symmetrical over the last seasons of Year 17 (see profile for details). During hunts or raids/sieges, he will smudge them out with black soot to cover the glow, otherwise, they are bright enough to note at first direct glance at his face. Not all his artwork currently portrays the mask markings.
He is also often bedecked in beads, small bells, feathers in blues, ribbons and braids thanks to the Ooze Event of Halloween 2021, and the Coathanger item that he got. The accessories generally are seen most in his mane and tail hair. He removes the brighter items and bells for hunts or battle.

She had been here before, and this would be her second time. She was alone still, mainly because she had been unsure about following the last puppy back home. She was too used to being on her own, but she craved interaction with others. She didn't really know what it was like to have friends or family since her mother disappeared shortly before she was weaned. She was thinner than most pups due to the fact she hadn't yet learned to hunt. But at least she could learn to fight here. Her paws stepped delicately upon the grass, her longer fur was still growing out and it made her more disproportionate and wiry looking. In time, she would be a beautiful creature. But for now, her fur shimmered in the light and her glow remained dim until she got older.

They weren’t left waiting too long before a thin pup came into sight. Ardyn’s head cocked. While her light was no competition to his mother’s, the glow in her coat was evident. But when he looked beyond the girl, he saw no adult quietly hanging back as his mother was doing, giving the two pups space to duke it out.
Nevertheless, his tail waved easily, flaring with extra heat as he halfway play-bowed, grinning in his usual ‘I know no strangers’ manner. She had claws like his and Aoife’s too!
“Sure! I’m Ardyn Adravendi, and that’s my mom. You want the first move?” Not only did he prefer intercepting an attack more, it was also polite. Granted had circumstances been ‘you are a trespasser on the pack lands’ he’d be the first to dive in.

The boy dropped in a play-bow before introducing himself “Sure! I’m Ardyn Adravendi, and that’s my mom. You want the first move?” She grinned a bit, shyly at first but she was quickly warming up to him already. Maybe it was her naivete or maybe she just didn't feel like she was in any danger. His mother didn't seem to show any aggression towards her, so she assumed it was safe to stick around. "Tel'Teukiira Ivae'ess! But you can call me Tel!" Her name had been the only thing that had been drilled into her head before her mother disappeared. She offered a quick, shy glance to his mother before turning her attention back to him. "Sure, thank you!" Although she hadn't been trained in manners too much, she still knew when to be polite most times. It came naturally to her at least. Spreading her paws awkwardly, she lowered her head as she sized him up. He was healthier and more fit than she was, so she had to think on her feet with this.

Ardyn took in the curious name with perked ears. Hey! She had a name almost as complex as his! Tel, would definitely be way easier to say, and he grinned, affirming, “Nice to meet you, Tel.”
He was astute enough even at his own young age to see that she was inexperienced. Had no one taught her from the start the basics and how to balance herself? So he waited to see what she did as she sized him up, giving her an encouraging smile, tail waving.
She came head on, and instead of side stepping, he crouched slightly, letting her catch him in her hug, though her nip found the side of his neck just behind the ear as his head ducked lower. He pushed forward, hopefully enough to topple the girl while she was on her back feet, weight shifting to his other three paws as his left front hand-paw lifted and sought to snatch her right hind leg around the hock, aiming to get a grip and pull the leg forward to coincide with his forward push.
He was far more careful than with his brother or Aksell, not wanting to hurt the other pup, and so, he didn’t implement his teeth.

Okay, so it was clear she didn't know what she was doing. And it became even more evident when she completely toppled over before she could manage anything more than a quick nip behind his ear. She felt his paw pull her hind paw out from under her, and the young pup fell onto her back. She struggled to right herself, but once she found her feet again she sought to quick lunge at him. She aimed to grab one of his forepaws in her teeth, though again, she wasn't aiming to bite him hard enough that she'd draw blood. As she did that, her left forepaw lifted as she aimed it at his muzzle, seeking to use it to thwart any potential attacks with his mouth should he decide to try and use his mouth this time.

His attacks worked, as he did his best to topple her carefully, letting her get to her paws instead of taking advantage in her complete wipe out. He bounced back slightly in a blay bow, silky tail flailing the air briefly in bright, obvious encouragement at her until she came for him again.
She went for one of his front paws, a paw rising for his muzzle. Ardyn’s left front paw rose, leaving only air for his opponent’s jaws, and he sought to capture her questing paw in his grasp, elongated toes ready to snap shut and tug as he sought to nip at her ribs just behind her elbow, using only his front teeth and leaving his long canines out of play.
Maybe, after this spar, he could show her how to fight, with his mother’s help, naturally.
