Pit Puppy

Darya knew winter was coming soon, and she knew that the raids were coming... which meant she needed to build up her stores. She knew these things, and was theoretically fulfilling these duties but it was less something she was actively doing and more something that was happening without much of her own control. Technically she was looking for some of the herbs she knew grew in The Range but she wasn't really engaging with it. Her brain was flipped off as much as it could be more than it was on lately and that was true now. She was in the middle of digging up a bundle of Meadowsweet, something that would be useful when the weather turned cold and sickness set in as it usually did at that time of year when a panicked bleating caught her attention. Darya lifted her head and did a quick head count of the herd, noting they were short at least one. She sighed, finishing digging up the Meadowsweet and dropping it on top of her pile, adding it to her small collection of Yarrow, Marigold and Boneset. She wasn't too far from the barn, and knew from the echo of the bleating that she was pretty sure it had come from within, so she left her pile of herbs where they were and moved towards the structure. Ah there, it was one of the young ewes, she had managed to get herself caught on one of the broken boards of the wall, her wool woven around the rugged edges. Darya moved towards her when- The ground went out from under her, and the woman fell. Panic thrilled through her and for the first time in a while Darya was suddenly very aware. Her forelegs flung out to try and catch herself, one of her paws hitting the ground flatly, but the other, her right paw didn't quite make it in time, instead hitting the side of her paw and twisting under her sudden weight. So Darya crumpled. Her limbs bending in as the rest of her body joined her front half in... the pit? Why there was a pit in the middle of the barn Darya had no idea. She'd spent most of her time avoiding being around other pack members as of late, lurking at the edges of the borders and learning the regular schedules of many of the members to avoid patrols, when she'd retreat further into the pack lands. So she hadn't really been aware of most of the goings on within the pack as of late, so she literally had no idea what the pit was even doing here, though it did smell heavily of a wolf she did not recognize. Well it was perhaps her luck that whoever was being kept here was significantly smaller than she was, so she'd have not trouble getting out. "блять!" She swore as she started pulling herself back up, collapsing again under the pain in her right ankle. She had to have twisted it, great... Darya tucked her right foreleg to her chest and wobbled back onto her own paws. The walls of the put barely reached up to her stomach and she wasn't quite sure how she hadn't even seen it... that's how out of it she was. Carefully she pulled herself up out of the pit and made a mental note to see about getting it filled in... it was clearly a hazard. She hobbled over to the still bleating ewe and carefully worked the sheep's' wool free from the broken board and watched it bound away. She dragged herself back towards her small herb pile, shuffled through it with her uninjured paw and set about munching on a sprig of Boneset, at least to help with the pain. Darya scooped up the rest of the herbs, and hobbled her way over to her little herb warren, she set about stashing the remaining herbs and then sought out some of her own stash. She pulled out a dandelion, one of the ones that hadn't yet turned white. The also pulled out two strips of leather and finding it easier to move outside of her tiny stash. She settled onto her stomach, and set about chewing on the dandelion, especially focusing on the root. Once she'd managed to chew a suitable poultice she gently rubbed the pulpy mixture onto her sore ankle, she wrapped the smaller strip of leather around her ankle to keep the mixture on her already pounding ankle, this was a little hard to do with one of her forepaws unusable. Even worse was the second strip, which she had to tie a knot in without making the loop too small, as she was attempting to build a sling to help keep her ankle off the ground in her daze, which was already starting to set in again as her adrenaline was already starting to wear off. Finally though she managed to work out a grip, a mixture of her left forepaw and her fangs to help make a knot, then came trying to wiggle her way into the sling. Tucking her right forepaw to her chest again she nosed at the sling until her muzzle was under the upper part of the loop and slowly worked her way under the leathers, until it was hanging limply from her neck. Then came rising to her paws, and carefully shifting her injured forepaw to get it through the loop and shaking herself so that the sling would rest across her shoulders, keeping her right foreleg tucked away from the ground. Finally she managed to shake and shimmy her way into a position that was comfortable and also going to keep her leg off the ground. Not that she was totally sure she needed it but frankly at this point Darya was hardly taking care of herself as is and this was the best way to make sure she didn't exacerbate her injury. Darya's task done the woman found all the energy fleeing her body, the woman had hardly had much to speak of for days, insomnia starting to plague her and now that she was done the exhaustion rolled over her in an oppressive wave. Darya lowered herself carefully onto her left side, all the emotion she worked to suppress each day overwhelming her exhausted form and she wept silently into the ground, unable to help herself any further today.
