Skadi raced through the trees at an all out run. Even though her lungs burned her expression was joyous and determined as she ran. It soured as a familiar shadow glided over her head and took the lead. She scowled at it and leaned forward, dredging up every last ounce of energy she had. She was not losing to this meanie again!
Despite her best efforts Skuggi’s lead continued to increase. By this point both were familiar with the path they were racing so the owl flit between branches and wove around the trees with ease. Skadi, meanwhile, had every bump and bush to contend with - that was going to be her excuse anyway.
And then she caught a break. The cocky bird looked back to check on her lead and in doing so accidentally veered to the side. It was a small blimp easily corrected but it took her off course just enough. Skuggi clipped a low branch and was shunted off to the side.
With a howl Skadi took the lead just in time to cross the finish line. Her first victory. She was going to ignore the “stumble” and say her win was 100% genuine. “Ha!” she howled. “The first of many!”
