If You Have To Explain A Joke, There Is No Joke

Dagrún raced through the knolls, ears forward and alert as she sought to find the field mouse she'd been chasing. Every so often she'd pause, listening intently for any sign of movement. Her brother made hunting look so easy! She really wanted to catch another rodent so they could work on making a game out of catch but o do that she needed to catch something. Dagrún slunk down low, sneaking through the yellowed, autumn grasses of the plains. She was focused on her hunting until she hears some odd, laughing sound. Like a cross between a laugh and a bark. She stood up and looked for the source of the sound. She saw a pack of about six of the ugliest wolves she'd ever seen in her life. They were spotted with short fur and strange hump-like backs. They seemed lost and confused and then one of the hyenas locked eyes with her. It started stalking toward her and she frizzed up and yelled. "Go away! This is Fireside's land!" The hyena said nothing, it just licked its lips.

Úlfr was laying outside his den with a buffalo leg bone in his jaws that he was chewing on happily. For once it wasn't really meant to be turned into anything. He was just chewing for the fun of it and also to get to the tasty marrow that lay in the center. It would be a wonderful treat. Soon though it was time for his practice patrol so he buried the bone as a treat for later and set out to patrol the borders. He was half way through his patrol when he heard a strange, almost laugh-like sound. Then he heard one of the pups call out and he raced onto the scene just in time to see a pack of six hyenas moving in on Fireside's border. "Quick, you better run." He set his defenses, hackles on end as he growled at the hyenas. Suddenly two of the creatures lunged for him and he hoped the pup would listen and get the heck out of here.

Dagrún didn't know what to do. She stared the hyena down as she felt fear take hold of her and root her to the spot. At that moment Úlfr appeared and told her to run. His sudden appearance spurred the hyenas into action. As two of them ran for the boy Dagrún turned around and tried to flee. Her movement caught the attention of another pair of hyenas and they gave chase. She shrieked as she dove into a badger den which was thankfully empty. The hyenas snarled and cackled as they dug at the den, breaking swiftly through the dirt. Dagrún growled then lashed out with her claws, striking one hyena across the nose. It yelped and stumbled back. The other hyena began to dig more furiously. Dagrún backed herself farther into the den and yelled. "Úlfr! Úlfr help me!" She hoped her parents would show up soon and rescue them.

Úlfr dodged to his left to avoid one of the hyenas, he reached his head around and snagged its left hind leg, right on the hock and he bit down hard, thrashing his head. Before he could break the bones the other hyena grabbed him by the scruff and dragged him off its friend. Úlfr yowled in pain and flailed violently until he managed to rip himself away from the hyena. He twisted around as they both lunged for him. Only a timely dodge beneath the nearest ones legs got him out of the way in time. It also had the added benefit of the two hyenas smashing into each other. They collided and snarled before regrouping and facing off against him. Úlfr winced at the pain and blood pouring down his neck. In the distance he could hear Dagrún scream for help.

Minute by minute the hyena's claws drew closer and closer. It was soon joined again by its fellow and between the two of them they were making short work of the den's structure. Dirt was falling on her and she searched desperately for some sort of back door but she couldn't see anything. She tried to be brave like her parents would be. What would her mother say to see her cowering like this. She swallowed and then lunged forward with both her front claws unleashed, she dragged them across the nose of one of the hyena's while her jaws ripped through the lower lip of the other. They both backed up, yowling and yipping from the pain. It only seemed to make them angrier and they dug violently at the den until they could reach her. She shrieked as they lunged but soon both were pulled away from her. Valdís mauled one and Halla another. Fear turned to elation as she let out a cheer.

Úlfr puffed up his chest, his hackles raising as he tried to make himself look as big as possible. However, outnumbered as he was it wasn't enough to make the hyenas back down. They moved forward and they both lunged. Úlfr focused on the left hyena. He slammed into it, fangs sinking into the left side of its face and as for the other hyena. Where was the other hyena? He didn't have to wait long to find out as Aerndis grabbed the hind end of the hyena he was fighting. She pulled back and dragged it away from him. Úlfr turned to see Álarr pulling his horns out of the chest of the other hyena he had just gored. Soon Halla and Valdís arrived with Dagrún safely in tow. Úlfr let out a loud sigh and slumped to his chest, glad to see the rest of the pack.
