Their family trip to the Armada's lands was one of the most thrilling experience Artorias had ever had in his young life! There was so much new stuff to see, everything so different from the forests and cliffsides of the Hallows. The Armada's home was flatter, with long stretches of grasslands, rolling hills, and vast plains along the edges of a shimmering sea. Artorias' wide puppy eyes feasted on everything he saw, taking in as much of the world with a gluttony for adventure and a wanderlust that could not be slaked. The more he saw of this amazing world, the more he wanted to explore and immerse himself in it. As the other pups and adults had broken off to play their own games and socialize, the black and blue pup had roamed off towards the glistening ocean. His mothers had warned him not to go into any water without an adult present, but they didn't say anything about being near the water. Besides, with all of the adults nearby and their pets close by keeping an eye on the army of fuzz balls, this had to be the safest place in all of Boreas!
Bright sunshine warmed his coat as Artorias wandered through the lowlands towards the beach, amber eyes eating up his surroundings. His ears stood erect to catch every wash of white waves against the golden shore, little black nose twitching as he sniffed the air, the scent of salt tinging the air around the coast and making his nostrils burn with the smell. It wasn't an unpleasant sensation though, just different. He had never been to the sea before, and staring out at the massive expanse of water shining like a bed of sapphires amazed the boy. He looked to the left, seeing only ocean as far as his eyes could see; he turned right and yep, it still kept going on and on! Wow...! It just goes on forever...! The boy found himself silently wondering if there was anything on the other side or if it just stretched on to infinity. The chitter of Tamsyn's lemur in a nearby tree made Artorias turn up to him with a low growl, glaring at his mother's lackey. He hated that monkey and how it followed him like a stalker just waiting for the opportunity to tattle on him. I'll get you one day, monkey...
Artorias glanced back at the gathering of wolves that had become smaller specks amongst the verdant green grasses. He wondered if he should head back or keep exploring on his own. He was a little disheartened that none of his siblings or the others had followed him out to explore, but he was also fine being on his own. Artorias had never fancied himself a leader and was perfectly satisfied being independent and doing his own thing.

Briar had tried to socialize and poke at some of the other pups that had come along from their parent's friends, but they were all pretty boring. The one spotty boy was kind of interesting for a second, but he was maybe a bit too full of himself for her taste - after all, he certainly wasn't better than her or her siblings. All the girls were either little or timid or quiet or... nothing she was interested in at least. By the time she was done inspecting the other visitors and she turned back to find the blue boy again he was gone. With a determined pout, she ran off to go find him since at least he looked interesting. She searched around the grassy plains for a bit before abandoning that area to move out toward the sea where she had found that crab with her brother.
Luckily the dark, blue marked boy was easy to pick out on the pale sand so as she approached the beach she spotted him immediately. With a proud smirk at her fairly quick detective work, she gave herself a quick shake and then trotted over to where he was standing. She happened to catch him glaring up at a tree near by and she gave a curious look up toward the branches and spotted some blue eyes peeking out at them. He was annoyed at the monkey? Maybe it was one of his parent's companions? She had quickly come to accept that her parent's various companions were always hanging around somewhere and they could potentially tattle on her... but also her dad's bear seemed to like her and as long as the bear was with her she felt like she could get away with sneaking out of the pack lands for little bits of time.
Ignoring the blue eyed primate for now, she turned her attention back toward her new favorite pack visitor, giving him a grin. "You ran off without me, blue boy!" she scolded with a giggle, her tail wagging behind her. The chittering and chattering of the lemur above them made her ear twitch and she looked back up at the companion with a bit of annoyance. "Well he's kinda loud, huh?" Looking back to her fellow pup she gave him a mischievous look and whispered, "Come on, we can ditch him!"

Artorias had just reached the golden yellow beach, his small paws crunching into the soft sand with a low of awe. Sand was much softer than the regular ground, and warmer too! It also left perfect little imprints of his paws wherever he stepped. While he busied himself with studying the unusual terrain, a voice he'd only recently learned rang out behind him, all but making the boy jump with a start. Artorias spun around to face Briar, eyeing the Fatalis girl's smile with a guarded expression. She hadn't been exactly the most welcoming wolf he met today, launching into a pseudo-interrogation about his fur colors and why he was so different looking than his siblings before even asking his name. She hadn't seemed all too pleased when he'd made a comment back about the little nubs of bone atop her skull that would eventually grow into antlers, but he was just giving back the same snark she had dished out first. He had enjoyed that probably more than he should have, and he half expected to get a scolding from Mama Tamsyn once they got back home for it. He supposed he had no real reason to be wary of Briar though, since she hadn't exactly been rude or mean to him or anything—not yet, at least.
The boy's brow narrowed in annoyance, responding simply with, "My name is Artorias." Up in the nearby tree, Blue chittered and chirped again, keeping his presence announced like an obnoxious chaperone. He shot another puppy growl at the primate, then scoffed and rolled his brilliant amber eyes when Briar commented on the monkey being loud. "He's a pain is what he is. I don't like him." Before he could do anything else, Briar came closer and whispered in his ear, her words making the appendage flick with interest. He didn't know what Briar had planned or where she wanted to take him, but he was never one to turn down the chance for adventure! Getting away from Blue was just an added benefit in his opinion. Wherever Briar wanted to take him, Artorias was keen to see.
"He's not very fast if he's not in a tree," he whispered back to Briar, keeping his gaze on Blue just over her shoulder. "On three, you run, I'll follow... One... Two... Three!"

Briar gave a big eye roll when he corrected her by telling her his name was Artorias. She knew his name, but blue boy was way better in her humble opinion. Blue Boy was way catchier and way more unique that a fancy name like Artorias. She didn't inform him of this though... but she silently knew that he would still be Blue Boy as far as she was concerned. Luckily they didn't dwell on this for too long since the chittering primate had both of their attention at the moment. So it probably was one of his mother's companions then if he was familiar enough with the blue-eyed creature to say he was a pain and that he didn't like him. That was more than enough for her to double down on her plans for how to get rid of their little shadow - at least for a little while. She knew all too well from how persistent her father's various animals were that if they were given a task then they were usually pretty set on seeing it through. In this case the task was watching them so they were going to have to be pretty clever to give this money the slip.
She nodded to the bit of information she was given about how he wasn't very fast out of a tree and started thinking of all the places near by that they might be able to hide. Once he started counting down to their escape she made a quick decision and as soon as he said "three" she was off! She darted away from the tree line, moving more out into the open beach to put an immediate bit of distance between them and where the lemur was most comfortable. She could hear him chattering and screeching after them, but the sound gadded off behind them so she guessed that he didn't get down to run after them - at least not right away. She curved their path down the beach a bit before swinging back inland a bit, sill avoiding the biggest cluster of trees and ducking behind rocks when she could. Eventually they got to the main training area for the pack and she ducked into the structure that they had build for their barracks. It was a pretty simple structure with plain walls and a flat roof, but it gave enough shelter for them to keep their extra training dummies and supplies in and offered a few extra places to sleep.
She skidded to a stop once they were inside and wriggled her way under one of the straw filled dummies to hide. She squirmed and turned to face back toward the door with just her head sticking out, a wide grin on her face while she tried her best to not let her panting be too loud. It was like a really exciting game of tag and she wanted to win so bad! Her ears were perked forward to listen for the sound of the lemur that was probably chasing after him. As loud as he was she had no doubt that they would hear him coming and she had to bite back some excited giggles at the prospect that they might have gotten away.

Briar had been quick on her reflexes, and as soon as Artorias finished his countdown, the little girl was already taking off down the beach in the opposite direction of the chittering primate. Artorias kicked off as well, having a little difficulty finding purchase for his paws in the soft sand, but steadily getting the hang of running on the beach. He kicked up a few bursts of sand as he went, disappearing after Briar in a miniature sandstorm while he listened to Blue screeching after them. He shot a wicked grin back at the monkey and stuck his tongue out at him as he became smaller and smaller, taking a little bit of delight in being able to outsmart his mother's pet. While Blue struggled to get down to catch up with them, Artorias and Briar were already long gone down the strip of coast together. Artorias reveled in the cool, salty sea air rippling through his fur and past his face, the cries of gull birds overhead and the sunlight warming his coat. His amber eyes stayed locked on Briar while he followed her, the two leaving twin trails of paw print tracks in the sand where they ran. Just as Artorias realized that Blue would probably use their tracks to follow them, Briar swerved back towards the mainland. Apparently she had caught on to that fact too.
Artorias veered off of the beach and back into the grassy lands of Armada territory, weaving past groups of trees and rocks. His heart was racing and his breathing had turned to panting while he chased after the girl. She was fast, he had to give her that, but he was able to keep up regardless of the chaotic path she was taking him on. Their sprint didn't last too much longer, as when they came to another clearing with a structure off to one side, Briar dove into it without a moment's hesitation. Artorias guessed she knew where she was going and followed her lead, rushing into the structure as well and pausing in the doorway just long enough to spot Briar's rear end scuttling beneath a dummy to hide. With no better idea, Artorias ran over and jumped over the dummy, worming his way underneath it next to the Fatalis girl and peering out at the entryway. His heart was hammering in his chest, mostly from the run but also from the anxiousness to see if they'd be caught. He tried to slow his breathing, taking long, heavy gasps of air to try and force his heart rate to slow. Wary eyes never left the door, blinking only sporadically so he didn't miss a thing. The tension built in the silent room, and other than the chirping of songbirds somewhere outside, everything was still.
One minute passed. Then two. Then five. The monkey never showed himself and couldn't be heard screeching nearby. Artorias slowly wiggled his way out from the dummy until his head was poking comedically out from the straw body. "I think the coast it clear," he whispered to Briar, shimmying and wiggling until he had popped himself out from underneath the dummy. The blue-furred boy padded with caution over to the doorway and peered outside, looking left, then right, then returning to Briar with a triumphant grin. "He's not out there. We lost him!"

Her quick thinking had earned them their freedom it seemed as the minutes ticked by while she laid there next to Blue Boy waiting to see if their escape plan had been successful. The longer they waited the more confident she got that they wouldn't be found. This was confirmed when after a paw full of minutes Artorias wiggled out of their hiding spot and went to double check to see if the lemur was out there. She shot him a similar victorious grin and wiggled back out from under the straw dummy as well, her tail wagging excitedly behind her. "Of course! I had no doubt!" she insisted with a confident toss of her head before trotted past him back out into the training area that the barracks opened up to. "That monkey had no chance of catching up to us, huh, Blue Boy?"
She giggled and went bounced her way down to the closest one of the dummies that was set out for others to practice on, the straw wolf stood upright on sticks that were buried in the ground. "What're you gonna do without those eyes on you?" she asked him over her shoulder, her turquoise eyes watching him curiously. He was most certainly by far the most interesting one of the bunch that Tamsyn and Resin brought to play with them, but she hadn't quite decided if he was actually interesting yet. Sure, his fur was different than the rest and she liked the blue hue of it, but if he wasn't any fun to be around then that didn't really matter, did it? "Do you wanna explore? Or do you like to fight? Or collect plants? What's your favorite thing?" She turned away from the dummy to face him again, giving the Blue Boy her full attention for a moment so she could decide if she wanted to hang out with him some more or not.
12-23-2020, 11:11 PM
Artorias watched Briar while she worked her way out of their hiding place and then waltzed past him with confident spring in her step and a nonchalant flip of her head. The little Fatalis girl was certainly very sure of herself and proud, carrying herself with an air of superiority about her. It made Artorias wrinkle his nose like he'd just tasted something exceptionally bitter. No one in the Hallows regarded themselves as superior to anyone else, so the elitism she was exuding was not something he was used to dealing with. He didn't know how to react to it though, so he just ignored it any followed her outside into the training yard. He glanced around their new surroundings, able to actually take in all the sights now that they weren't running away. He stared in wonder at the wolf dummies and the scuff marks in the earth around the training grounds. Was this where all the mighty warriors in Mama's stories came to hone their skills? Was this where his own mothers had learned how to be the greatest fighters? It felt surreal to be standing where they once had learned as well. Wow... Maybe one day I'll get to train here to become a knight too...! he thought with an excitement welling up inside his little heart.
Briar made a statement that Blue had no chance of keeping up with them, and Art gave a short laugh and grin back at her. He didn't miss her calling him Blue Boy again, and although he mentally chided her by repeating his name in his head, he decided against saying it out loud again, at least this time. "Ha! He's waaaaay too slow without his trees! He never stood a chance of outrunning us!" he agreed. She asked him what he was going to do now, and Artorias hesitated for a moment. He hadn't considered what would come next; everything had happened so fast, he hadn't come up with any kind of plan. Before he could tell her as much, Briar looked back at him with intrigued turquoise eyes and asked what he liked to do for fun, then listed off a few options. Artorias guessed these were probably some of her favorite things too, and he was happy to hear that exploring and fighting were among them. Plants? Bleh, who cared for collecting plants? That sounded more like work than fun to him. But then again she was a girl, and didn't girls love flowers and things like that?
"I like to fight! I'm training to be a knight, just like Mom and Mama someday, and then I'll be a great warrior as well!" declared the excited pup with a wide smile and fiery eyes. "I like to explore too! It's fun going places and seeing what secrets you can find and how different other lands are! Do you like fighting and exploring too?" His attention was fully focused on Briar, watching her with a wagging tail, hoping she would be into at least one of those things that they could do together. Of course, if she just wanted to collect her plants, he could always explore the areas they went while she picked flowers or berries or did whatever it was girls did around here.

Well good, if nothing else he was a fighter. Everyone should at least know how to fight according to her father, but it made a difference knowing that he wanted to be a fighter. Then at least they could spar and stuff and he’d actually be fun to fight with. The exploring thing she was indifferent on, but she certainly wouldn’t turn down a trip to a new place or something like that. Fighting seemed to be their common ground and that was fine by her. She liked all the stuff she was learning about healing just about as much as she liked the fighting stuff so either topic would have been fine - although she had to admit that trying to take this Blue Boy herb hunting didn’t really seem like the best idea. She had a feeling that he couldn’t even tell the difference between a dandelion and some horsetail.
“Well of course I like fighting. My father is the best fighter after all,” she asserted with a grin, her tail wagging proudly. She’d heard about his mothers and how they used to be a part of the Armada before one of them went to start their own pack so she knew for a fact that her father had trained one of them himself. “He’s the Warlord, you know. He’s going to teach me everything he knows!” Her mother was a really good fighter too so between the two of them she was certain that she’d be the best fighter around once she was done with her training!
Of course Blue Boy was trying to claim that he was going to be the best warrior, but how could he do that when she was obviously going to be the best? She gave him a challenging look and added, “I bet I could beat you in a fight right now though. I beat two of my sisters at the same time!” Okay, maybe she didn’t win but she didn’t loose either so it still counted, right?

Briar went on with her cocksure attitude, presenting herself as some sort of warrior princess from some fancy pedigree. It made Artorias wrinkle his nose again and scowl. She was so boastful, so full of herself, it was unreal. How could her father be the best fighter if his mother had been the one to teach him everything? That didn't make sense! He opened his mouth to refute her points—only to be immediately shut up as she kept talking. She bragged about beating two of her sisters in a fight, then challenged him to one. At least, he thought she was challenging him; it certainly sounded like one anyway. He tilted his head to the side, perplexed by her behavior. Who was this girl and who had filled her head with this self-entitled nonsense? He mulled over whether he should retort or not, thinking back on his mother's instructions to mind their manners and be on their best behavior... but she was openly challenging his mothers' abilities as the greatest warriors! Surely that couldn't stand!
"Oh yeah, I met your dad! My mom did say he was an amazing fighter! She would know, since she was the one who trained him and taught him everything after all." Artorias paused for a moment to savor Briar's expression when he said that. Even the greatest of warriors had to learn somewhere, and it just so happened that both he and her Warlord father had learned from the same source. Artorias gave her a wry smirk, then replied, "Oh woooow, which sisters were those? The little sister or the littler sister?" Okay, so he definitely wasn't minding his manners anymore, but Briar was asking for it, and he was just giving it back as good as she was giving it—if not better. You don't win a fight without overpowering your opponent, after all.
There was still the matter of her maybe challenge that she issued. Artorias fixed Briar with fiery amber eyes that did little to hide his irritation or his eagerness to meet her challenge head on. "Why the shocked face? Never had a wolf talk to you the way you talk to them before?" he remarked, flashing his sharp puppy teeth in a grin and also a display of his fighting weapons, testing the waters to see if she'd still want to fight him. "What are you gonna do about it?"

Was he... talking back to her?! At first she couldn't believe it since the only wolves that had ever tried to give her some kind of retort was her siblings, but even then they were all pretty similar minded so it wasn't like they had much to debate on besides the occasional insistence that they were the best of the litter. But this blue boy seemed to think he could go toe to toe with her and her wide eyed look of surprise quickly turned to a glaring scowl. Fine, sure maybe Aunt Resin did help train her father, but that didn't mean she was better. And she knew that she was the tallest of her sisters, but being big didn't always mean anything! She was about to make some comment about that when he questioned her expression and pointed out how no one had talked to her like that before as if he was reading her mind. That got her even more flustered and exasperated, her tawny brown and teal scruff puffing up with irritation.
At his obvious challenge she smirked and didn't bother responding, instead trying to get the element of surprise as she leapt right toward him to kick off their fight. She sprung forward to try and wrap her forelegs around his neck, hoping to use the momentum from her jump to knock him to the ground. Either way, she still used the claws on her back legs to grip into the sand more and help make her stance more sturdy. She wouldn't use the claws on her front paws just yet... that could be her secret weapon for later. She also reached forward to try and grab his scruff with her sharp puppy teeth so she'd have a better grip on him to keep him from getting away.

The looks on Briar's face were priceless, and Artorias could not bring himself to regret a single thing he'd said to cause them. Oh, he knew he was going to get scolded for sure if his parents ever found out, but he didn't care, he had defended his family's honor. Her gobsmacked expression shifted suddenly into a smirk, and Artorias recognized the look in her eyes. It was the same look Rudyard had whenever he thought he was going to get a sneak attack in on the blue-furred boy. Fortunately, Artorias had been mentally ready for a retaliation from Briar, and when she lunged at him, Artorias had been ready. He didn't move out of the way of her attack, instead bracing his paws on the sandy ground like he had been taught in training to intercept her pounce head-on. Both wolf pups were about the same size and weight, meaning he would have to outmaneuver her. Artorias folded his ears back against his skull, ducking his head down as he felt Briar's paws around his neck, and then using their close quarters he shot upward, aiming to bite at where her neck and shoulder met with needle-like puppy teeth before she could complete her grapple. He hoped to keep his stance stable so she couldn't drag or move him, but to also use her own momentum to carry through with his bite and drag her to the ground if he was able to get a hold of her.

Briar got her hold around his neck, but he moved too quick for her to bite his scruff. Instead, his teeth caught where her neck and shoulder met and made her yelp and growl in response, scowling and grimacing at his attack. For the most part in the spars she did with her siblings they weren't allowed to really bite or use their claws, at least not enough to really hurt, but apparently everything was allowed right now so she wasn't going to hold back either! Since her paws were already wrapped around his neck and he seemed to be trying to push her down, she went to dig her claws into the skin on the back of his neck, trying to hook her feline claws into him so that she could keep a solid grip on her opponent. Then she attempted to let herself fall back into the soft sand of the training ground and pull her down with him, going deadweight around his neck. At the same time, she tried to turn her head to aim a bite at the top of his head, hoping she would at least encourage him to let go of her neck to get his dumb, sharp puppy teeth off of her.

A small glimmer of triumph sparked inside Artorias when he felt his teeth make contact with Briar and heard her yelp. That'll show you! he thought, but that moment of success was short-lived when he felt sharp claws suddenly dig into his scruff. A muffled yelp escaped the boy who refused to let go of his hold on her, wincing through the stinging pain of her claws biting into his skin. Their tangle suddenly became a grappling match, and the next thing Artorias realized, gravity was shifting around him. Briar had put all of her weight back and was pulling him to the ground. Though his stance was stable, and he could have fought to stay upright, it would take more strength than his puppy body had, and both pups went tumbling to the sand-covered ground.
Artorias did not let Briar go however, if anything clamping his jaws tighter on his hold by her neck, growling while he tried to thrash back and forth. His ears remained flat to his skull, preventing her bites from finding his sensitive ears. Her claws in his neck hurt like a bitch, but so long as he kept a hold on her, they were in a stalemate. Now grappling on the ground like a wrestling match, Art tried to curl his body in to bring his back paws between the two pups, attempting to find purchase with strong kicks in Briar's stomach. Close quarters fighting limited them both on their movements and attacks, but it also left them both exposed to one another. It was a dangerous type of fighting, but the young pup wasn't thinking about that, focused only on trying to ignore her claws in his skin and getting Briar to release him first.

They were in a complete stalemate as they grappled together and hit the fairly soft ground with his teeth still latched on to the base of her neck and her claws dug in deep to his scruff. It seemed like her bites around his head didn't really do much to get him to let go since she couldn't quite reach from this angle to do much more than graze the top of his head and his ears were folded out of her reach. She just wanted to get him off of her, but at the same time she was too stubborn to be the first one to let go. It seemed like they were pretty evenly matched and that was maybe the most frustrating bit of all of it! She wanted to be able to completely wipe him out and prove that she was better, but he wasn't going to let her do that without a real fight.
She coiled hind legs to kick at him with her back feet and he happened to have the same thought as her as their back paws started kicking and flailing at each other's stomachs. His hit her a couple of times, knocking the wind out of her a bit but not hurting too bad. She felt like she had a slight upper hand in this department though when she let her claws in on the action as well, attempting to swipe at his stomach with her claws exposed. She didn't try to kick too hard like this since a little nagging voice in the back of her head knew that she'd get in real trouble if she really, really hurt him like this, but if it was enough to just get him to let go then that was victory enough for her as far as she was concerned.

With them both just scrambling about on the ground, their fight became more like a war of attrition than a proper spar. Neither Artorias nor Briar seemed to want to let up or give the other one any inch of space to move. The two headstrong puppies were now just grappling and wrestling for any sort of advantage they could seize over their opponent. Art felt his paws make contact with Briar's stomach, only to feel her legs kick back in turn, following his lead and leaving the two in a kicking match. Unfortunately for him, Artorias lacked the benefit of having the sharper feline claws that Briar had, so when a couple of her kicks landed on his stomach, those claws raked against his skin, cutting through his soft belly fur as if it wasn't even there. Artorias yelped in surprise and pain, trying to kick his legs back out to catch and block hers where he could, but still neither of them let the other one go. He refused, holding on through kicks and scratches of razor sharp claws, staunchly maintaining their grapple and denying her an easy victory. She had thought he'd be an easy opponent; so long as he shattered that expectation and gave her a dose of reality, that maybe she wasn't as great as she thought she was, Artorias could count that as a win.
