Boreas and Auster have both been plagued with an unusually harsh winter, and as spring arrives it becomes clear that the bitter cold is reluctant to leave. Everything seems to be covered in deep drifts of snow, from the glaciers of the north to the farthest reaches of Auster. The further north you go the worse the storms seem to become. With lands frozen and sea ice spreading, freezing over even The Bifrost for the first time in history, the weather seems more bitter than you ever remember it.

Stranger yet are the stories beginning to filter in from the far north. Herds of strange beasts and nomadic wolves, larger than any known dire wolves, have appeared, migrating across the frozen seas to escape the season’s wrath. They have been unseen in these lands for untold centuries, lost to history and nearly gone from legends, until now...

BESTIARY

The guide is a record of all species sighted in Boreas and/or Auster so far. More will be added as the event progresses.

Original Dire Wolves.

These wolves are larger than any known wolf species on Boreas or Auster, standing anywhere from 45" to 55" tall, with a comparatively larger skull and stronger jaws. Some seem to know the native tongue while others do not, though little else is known about them since their arrival. Rumor has it that the largest wolves in the lands (our "dire wolves") may have some line of descent to these wolves.

Glyptodons.

These creatures resemble armadillos, only they are much, much larger and more heavily armored. They are taller than the largest wolves on Ardent and can weigh over ten times as much as any wolf. Though they are physically massive, they are quite slow and clumsy and easily evaded if you stay on your toes.

Megalonyx jeffersonii.

The Jefferson's ground sloth resembles modern sloths, only they are substantially larger, standing up to 10 feet tall.

MAMMOTH HUNT

Now that numerous new species have paved their way onto Boreas, something even more unusual has been spotted...
Sparse herds of mammoths can now be found across Boreas. While similar in general appearance to an elephant, these massive creatures tower high above their native counterparts, and are covered with thick coats of shaggy fur. To take one down would be a colossal task, but perhaps not impossible…

REQUIREMENTS:
To successfully take down a mammoth (and claim an exclusive award, and applicable skill points), the following requirements must be met:

  • 10 or more participants (only 2 can belong to the same player, per each hunt)
  • 2 completed threads total (3+ rounds for each participant in each thread)
    • 1 preparation thread
Any essential preparations before the fight begins. Are weapons made? Poisons prepared? Who is running the hunt? How do you plan to go about this? Who has what roles?
    • 1 hunt thread
The actual hunt! Everyone must be participating in their own way.
  • Threads must be done consecutively. That is, all participants much finish the preparation thread before moving on to the hunt itself!
  • If a participant doesn't post to an ongoing thread within 3 OOC days, someone in the hunt can post in Maintenance, kicking the character from the hunt and allowing an NPC Dire Wolf to join in on the hunt to keep it going. Staff can also do this if they notice a character has not been posted. If this happens, please no hard feelings! Due to the requirements of this event, it's vital things move along swiftly! If 3 participants drop out, the hunt will automatically fail.
  • Only one hunt per character!
REWARDS:
  • Exclusive award for taking down a mammoth
  • 30 skill points, in any 2 skills
  • One randomly rolled player who completed a mammoth hunt will get a Paleo Pass, which is a permanent item that allows you to have one paleo creature (any species found in the Bestiary, being updated as the event progresses.)

Submit all mammoth hunt entries here.
